    Self Mortification

Someone having their ears pierced is not a valid comparison, Wil. The cheek impaling is a better comparison, and, if people are prepared to step back and look at it, what conclusion can they fairly draw, other than to determine that it is a shocking action, carried out by superstitous people...

    Self Mortification

Hi, Happy to clarify. Anyone who self harms does, by definition, require the best psychiatric treatment that they can secure, no matter if their reason happens to be a dysfunctional childhood or some messed up notion that by doing this, it somehow brings them 'closer to god'.

Lots of red wine helps, I find. :)

Can someone answer me these in simple terms?

Well, with the exception of Mohammmed, no one, to the best of my knowledge, kills in the name of Spong Bob (or any of the others). Spongebob is seen as an entirely fictional charachter. Big difference...

    Self Mortification

Seems we concur. The basic premise to what I was saying is, in essence, precisely what you have stated here - that self mortification of the flesh should raise a red flag to any competent psychiatrist, and, on that basis, they should receive proper care and attention....medically.

Can someone answer me these in simple terms?

Yes - fully concur. God of The Gaps, liked that. What people do when they turn to a god to answer the 'big questions', is that they essentially fill a gap in their knowledge. Of course, whether or not the knowledge being given is crap or not is almost moot since the point seems to be to...

Can someone answer me these in simple terms?

Me? Believe the accounts in the Bible? Not I. Not as literal, accurate, intelligently recorded, evidence based information. Nope, as far as I am concerned, god has not killed anyone, created anyone, nor sent anyone to heaven or hell. There is no evidence for it, and in the absence of...

Can someone answer me these in simple terms?

There are televanglesits in the US who have actually been prosectuted, and I find that entire genre stomach turning, to be honest. It is sad that there are so many desperate and superstitious people out there, in US society, that they would send money they could use for bills and food to some...

    Self Mortification

Yes. And the entire psychiatric profession would see self harming using objects, as a sign of mental illness, and recommend that the patient receive some form of treatment, to aid them. It would not be seen as something to be respected or revered, but for what it would be - a sickness. I am...

Can someone answer me these in simple terms?

Sorry...what? When it comes to the OT, even Christians I know admit that it is a violent book, and that god is incredibly prone to violence in it. What does that have to do with what scientific(sic) measure I may or may not have, compared to you? If we were bringing science into it, then...

Can someone answer me these in simple terms?

How do you feel about god performing personal miracles for people, either remotely, or maybe through someone, like a preacher type, in the modern age? Have there been any examples of the blind suddenly being able to see again, with this being attributed to god? Are there examples of the lame...

Can someone answer me these in simple terms?

I fail to see how anyone even vaguely familiar with the OT to deny that the god described in it was culpable of great jealousy, disproportionate acts of violence, not to mention the killing of humans who had done no wrong, sometimes on a scale that would be easily seen as a genocide today...

    Misconceptions about Islam

Do you see a contradiction though. Of all the religions, it appears to many that those most likely to take offence, sometimes violently, are Muslims. It is hard to imagine someone being on the wrong end of a death wish, for drawing cartoons of Moses or Jesus, for example, and yet, the same...

    Misconceptions about Islam

I really do not think that Israel can take the moral high ground over 'terrorism'. Truth be told, the very state of Israel was actually established on the foundations of terrorism, by groups like Irn Gun and the Stern Gang. These Zionist terrorists were around long before Islamic terrorists...

    Misconceptions about Islam

Hi, Okay, I will play 'Devils Advocate' here, and play the game. There seems to be a feeling among many British people that there is a concentrated effort to Islamify the UK, with a view to making up the bulk of the population, at least in certain towns and cities. This would be with a view...

    Self Mortification

We all know this. Self harming is not a mental illness in itself, I understand. However, it is symptomatic of a large underlying emotional problem, in almost all studied cases. In respect of Catholic's and those that partake in this out of some twisted religous ideal the same applies -...

    Self Mortification

Patently not, Nick, esp since I condemened it in my OP. I don't subscribe to any religion, let alone harming myself in the name of some twisted religous practice. There is little difference imo, between a self harmer, and someone who engages in this type of thing for so called 'spirituall'...

    Self Mortification

Surely this can only be the manifestation of a mental illness, no matter who or how many engage in it? No rational person can give any reasonable merit to this action, esp in the extreme form. Mortification of the flesh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
