    What defines a Christian?

I agree (although I didn't used to). CS Lewis in "Mere Christianity" makes the same point: "Objections … have been expressed against my use of the word Christian to mean one who accepts the common doctrines of Christianity. People ask: “Who are you, to lay down who is, and who is not a...

    What defines a Christian?

Hi Jiii. Interesting question. I'm curious what you mean by a "mostly Christian" or "Christian-influenced" spirituality? Monotheism? Heaven? Hell? Do unto others? Just curious. :)

    The ultimate comparative study?

Hi OC. I have not read the entire thread, so hopefully this hasn't been touched upon. I think what you might be looking for is "perennial tradition." Look into the writings of Huston Smith, Fritjof Schuon, Rene Guenon, James Cutsinger or Aldous Huxley. (My website has a link to a list of...

    Spirituality or Hallucination?

I never had a spiritual experience with any of the drugs I took during the 80's (LSD, MDMA, psilocybin, cocaine or pot - yes, I was an idiot then). I have had experiences, as Wil described, where I've become aware that things are not as they seem - meaning things are unified and connected...

    knowledge and belief

Very true words. I had to take a leap into trust. Scarey stuff, but definitely worth it. Thinking about bouncing on the trampoline just can't compete with actually bouncing on the trampoline (thanks Rob Bell). "This is the door to the Palace of No-Where ... " Have you read Finley's commentary...

    What defines a Christian?

Hey, no worries. I'm just now coming to find out how very different Christianity is in places like South America and Africa. Many Americans would consider such types of Christianity very heretical indeed (and might not even recognize them as Christian at all). I like to think that God is bigger...

    Theological Problem

I would ask that Christian "How does having sex show disloyalty to the one who created sex in the first place?" Because celibacy does not impart purity. Sex is not dirty. God created life and life procreates, usually through sex. I, for one, hope it stays that way ... although there is that...

    I didn't add it afterward, I promise.

    What defines a Christian?

That was Jiii. That's why I said seems to be ... I don't claim to know your viewpoint for sure. Only you can know that. I'm basing my comment on your posts. I was told I wasn't Christian by many "Christians" when I was "liberal" (crap I hate labels). I'd probably still be told I'm not...

    Telos or Dual

It's a somewhat made up word from the Greek root words of "Neos" which means "new" and "Noia" which means "mind." I wanted something original, but just about everything I searched for had been taken. Since the advent of the internet, there truly doesn't seem to be "anything new under the sun."...

    What defines a Christian?

Hi Ruby. :) One point I feel needs to be made here, fundamentalism and orthodoxy are not the same, although fundamentalists will often label themselves as orthodox. I, for example, care deeply about the miracles, Jesus divinity and the resurrection, but I am most definitely not a...

I understood that the quote was written to Dondi. Nevermind on the rest. :)

    Is Jesus' Resurrection a Fact-Event?

I find this frustrating too, especially since "preparation for the hereafter" is not a Biblical concept, although many Christians believe it is. The Bible teaches that man will inherit the Earth. This should make us want to cherish and take care of it. The Bible talks about bringing Heaven to...

    Is Jesus' Resurrection a Fact-Event?

That confused me. You're seeking evidence from more than one source because it's important to "one's eternal salvation," which is itself a Biblical concept? Did I misunderstand? If so, I apologize. It just confused me is all.

    Is Jesus' Resurrection a Fact-Event?

This is very true. Earlier Jewish writers borrowed from Near East philosophy in the writing of the Genesis account and other books. Jesus was certainly familiar with Greek philosophy. So was Paul, who quoted other thinkers. Both he and Jesus embraced truth wherever they found it. :)

Cool interpretation of that text. I've never thought of it that way before. :)

    Is Jesus' Resurrection a Fact-Event?

"Warning, the following might be a bit off topic." Hi InLove! And orthodoxy agrees. The layering of scripture is not a liberal phenomena (which I didn't know as a fundamentalist). I came across a post by Thomas yesterday that talked about the four ways to interpret a text: Literal sense...

    Telos or Dual

What you wrote above is what I think of when I think "dualism." That it is ontological, with no moral value attatched. What I mean by 'not two' can by pictured like a coin: two sides, one 'thing.' Is light seperate from dark? Are they two different 'things' that come and go depending on...
