    Religion as Self Fulfilling Prophecy

You should not, dear friend. Islam does not give you authority to make 'unholy' conjectures. Only what was revealed to Muhammad (ṣallā -llāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam). "Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Come! Let me recite to you what your Lord has forbidden to you: do not associate others with Him ˹in worship˺...

    Religion as Self Fulfilling Prophecy

I do not need any comforter. But yes, you are correct that Hinduism does allow the use of softly (or hardly) held belief in a deity (or in a multitude of deities, not limited just to male or female). As for my own belief, it is strictly non-dual. I give no space to God, soul, heaven, hell, end...

    Religion as Self Fulfilling Prophecy

I see no reason why an individual should sink into despair and resignation. Where do you want to transcend? Will this transcending allow you to live for ever? This desire to transcend is the root of the problem. We are social animals. Live the life as it is thrown to you in the best possible...

Do we choose what we believe?

'pick a path' rarely works Why do you say that? Many former Christians identify themselves as Muslims, Hindus or Buddhists; and so do people from other religions also. They do it themselves for their own reasons after they become acquainted with their new path.

Do we choose what we believe?

I stand by my statements 1 and 3. Let me explain the second (post #116): My choice of questions depends on my childhood indoctrination, education, religious beliefs, social and personal experiences. We Hindus, term it as 'Samskaras' (totality of learning). God and soul do not come to me...

Do we choose what we believe?

Did I say that? Both your links take me to my post # 101 which said: "Not for all. Some still stick to their books which are comical, claiming existence of Gods and messengers from that imagined entity." Did I say that all our actions are automatic, without any effect from our consciousness...

Do we choose what we believe?

One can't think straight with a monkey mind. @Blindwatchmaker did not reject free-will altogether. As an atheist, also do not reject free-will altogether. I said it is conditional (my post, #4), based on childhood indoctrination, religious influences, education, social and personal experiences...

Do we choose what we believe?

Do some meditation. Calm your monkey mind. Mostly ignorance, sometimes willful.

Do we choose what we believe?

That is what I said. We go through a process of involuntary acceptance to a critical acceptance later in life. Even the choice of actions is most of the time involuntary, sort of automatic based on our learning.. To act critically, analytically, is a reserve of wise people.

Do we choose what we believe?

Welcome to the forum. I did not vote because IMHO, what we choose depends on what we learn before the e.final choice. That is childhood learning, education, society, religious and personal experiences in life. I would say it is not a free-choice but conditioned. I chose to be an atheist Hindu.

That is possible even without invoking any 'Holy Spirit' (for an atheist like me).

Encounters with different beliefs when you were a kid

Mythology is alive and still controls our actions. We get cues from what we are told or have read since childhood.

On the contrary, I am just a 'mirage' (Maya) according to Advaita. I am not what I am perceived as. Being Aupmanyav is a temporary phenomena. It will change soon, probably within the next five years (I am 82+ at the moment. I have already lived longer than my father or grandpa). Same with the...

Encounters with different beliefs when you were a kid

Books were always a delight, Bhagawat Purana in particular (I am a fast and sort of non-stop reader). A 1940 edition (2 years before my birth) is still with me in fairly good condition. Read Pelican books on history. I thank my deceased father for making these available to me. Books gave me a...

    One God, Many Paths

Ah, I have done that many times in the forum. Atheist because I believe in non-duality - Advaita (a-not, dvaita-duality, of any kind whatsoever). There is this substrate of the universe (we term it as Brahman) and that constitutes all things in the universe, living or non-living. Therefore...

    One God, Many Paths

Yes, at first humans considered themselves to be the part of nature. Then, shamans, prophets, messengers, manifestations, mahdis, brahmins, clerics, priests created God for their own benefit, This is a continuous process. They keep spending billions make temples, churches, mosques, trying to...
