Thanks I, Brian ... I sent a friend here to brush up on her comparative religion and I came accross this forum. "Dryads" typically draw my attention :)

The tree has it's own spirit so when you feel the loss passsing by a tree that has been cut down, in my experience, you are sensing the loss of "life", the life of the tree. The dryad can choose to interact with a tree's spirit, but I wouldn't think that the dryad would "die" when the tree dies...
