Pretty crappy song, but they are not necessarily wrong.
All religions are about control.
Perhaps at times adherents to some of them have really worked at using the framework of the religion to help people achieve real enlightenment, but this happens only rarely.

Crappy songs are written every day. An intelligent being does not take them seriously even if they are essentially right.
All religions are delusional mythologies. Some are more harmful to the human mind than others are. The worst religions in human history are Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. They are the worst because they are founded on hate and fear. They construct an imaginary god who is a frightening as possible. They used the template of a Bronze Age War Lord. These are the Anthropomorphic Gods (made in the image of man, a bad man seeking power.)
All Anthropomorphic gods are capricious, vindictive, commanding worship, demanding blind obedience, instilling hate and persecution, inciting war on "infidels," with intermittent Divine Rage Attacks of Genocidal violence. The Bible suggests. If you read between the lines, that God made us just to torment and torture us like a bad kid sets a small kitten on fire.
Anthropomorphic religion is not only delusional. It constitutes a negative meme (mind virus per Dawkins). A negative meme is some set of false rules, mythology, superstition, infused by irrational stories, and encouraging hatred of those who think differently.
They are mind viruses because it has been shown that they actually rewire the brain's cognitive circuits. They rewire the brain to accept irrationality, to ignore intuitive morality, and damage the sceptical filter so that rubbish is not blocked from being downloaded. Memes are infused in a child by endless repetition multiple times a day, every day, and more intensely on Sundays.
This forces irrational and counter-moral concepts to bypass the rational circuits and not blocked by our frontal lobe Sceptical Filter (Rubbish Filter.) Over time, the child accepts the religion. The degree of acceptance depends on the intensity of the meme brain washing and the individual spectrum of unhealthy to healthy brains in kids.
For most of them general gullibility makes them victims of fraud artists, and tricky cult leaders.
The kids with unhealthy brains, programmed by negative memes (mind viruses), not only become more religious but fanatically religious. These are the source of the thousands of people who kill for God, in Christianity and Islam.
Religion is unhealthy. It may have once been a factor in our evolution. It may have led us to kill of H. erectus, H. neanderthalis, and H. rhodesiensis (our cousins) so that we prevailed as the only human species still standing.
In more advanced society, religion does more harm than good. It is obvious with the Christian and Islamic Judaists. It is less obvious with those fanatical believers who discriminate against different believers, other ethnic and racial groups.
The increased gullibility of the religious person allows them to believe the propaganda of Corporations, Banks, and Politicians. Thus, it has led to the death of democracy in America.
In post-democracy America, a Cabal of Corporations many of whom are foreign owned rules you. They pay your politicians to make laws that are to their advantage and to your disadvantage. Union of Corporations and Government by definition in an Italian Dictionary is Fascism. Now that you have lost your freedom, how can you get your freedom back?

Yes, the association of violence is all too real. Read the newspapers or watch CNN, BBC. Religion and/or religious identification is at the roots of the major international conflicts and risk of nuclear war. The history of religion parallels the worst wars in European and American history.
