'Family': Fundamentalism, Friends In High Places : NPR

“In the book The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, author Jeff Sharlet examines the power wielded by a secretive Christian group known as the Family, or the Fellowship.”

I have many friends in East and Central Africa from work three years. I make trips to Rwanda at least once per year. I was horrified to discover the growing power of an American funded terrorist organisation called the Family. This is a far right wing extremist Christian Fundamentalist doing extensive missionary work in Africa. Their main thrust is against homosexuals, witches, abortionists, women getting abortions, and heretics (anyone disputing the Family Dogma.)

Homosexuals or suspected homosexuals have been assaulted, tortured, and even killed. A Ugandan doctor thinks hundreds have been murdered and many of the victims were not even homosexuals. Several abortionists have been killed in Uganda (most are not medical doctors). A Sudanese policeman said that women have been killed for seeking or having an abortion.

The Family is also pushing to influence or control political structures in several nations of East Africa. I did not see any sign of this activity. The information came from a number of different people who lived there.

I had never heard of such a secretive cult with some hint of terrorism. Would someone give me information of this group which is supposedly centred in America.

The poor people have Al Qaeda controlling much of Somalia and now a Christian version of the Taliban in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

Any information is appreciated.

These people are like pimps, in my opinion. By analogy, sex is basically a good thing. Pimps turn it into something to manipulate for power and profit.

Thomas Frank's What's the Matter with Kansas? contains a little more info. It says the most prominent member of The Family is Senator Sam Brownback (whose Washington residence is a townhouse owned by The Family), and that the group's primary mission seems to be bringing Third World dictators to DC to meet with American bigwigs. Frank cites another piece by Sharlet, "Jesus Plus Nothing" (article in Harper's March 2003) on their admiration for Hitler:

"The Family views Hitler's ideology not as a philosophical model, but as an organizational schema. Members ignore the fact that 'organization', in its most degraded sense, was the core of Hitler's fascism, preferrring to emphasize the 'fellowship' Hitler fostered within his elite cadres. The Family aspires to the same bond: throughout its rhetoric, references to the 'vision' Hitler had for Germany are extremely common, with the caveat that it's worth examining for its roots in a band of brothers dreaming in the back of a Bavarian beer hall. So might one of the Family's small prayer cells of business, military, and political leaders transform America, the Family hopes."

When "fellowship" becomes the goal, then God has been thrown away.
