Today, unlike in years past, we are subjected to 24/7 news and quasi news/opinion shows.
And if we were to succumb to the fear generated by the media, we would never let our kids out, because of that paedo that might be lurking in the bushes, there would be no use making any long term plans, because (insert nations) were going to start a World War any time soon, and all of society would be a drunken, violent, dangerous rabble.
Without knowing it, we do often succumb to the overstated fears that are spewed out to us in the media, who are equally good at spreading panic over things like Swine Flu and Mad Cow Disease, all to keep us in a state of perpetual fear, it would seem.
Yes indeed, the world through the eyes of a news programme can be a rather depressing place, since they almost exclusively discuss the most terrible events of the day.
I am not suggesting that the media ignore terrible events across the world, of course not, but they could aspire to a little more balance, a bit more light to go with the dark?
After all, as much as those awful things do happen, a lot of very good things happen, every day, as well.
And yet, the amount of media coverage devoted to stories that are uplifting and positive, they are almost nil.
Don't people want to hear about the good news?
That would be out of step with how people are, because it is usually the good news that we want to hear, so I am not convinced that the media do their coverage that way because we do not want to hear about good news.
Yes, of course it is good to be up to speed on what is going on in Libya, or with Gov, but it is just as good to know about the acts of personal courage, scientific achievements, and against the odds stories of the day...for that balance.
Sensationalism does sell, I get that, but I still think there is a niche for someone to produce an online (if not physical) newspaper, which focused 90% of positive stories from around the world, and domestically.
