The Brain As Healer
I have been enjoying a rather unique experience for a spiritual person. My sister's cat Lucky has severe nerve damage to his front right leg, and the veterinarian expressed doubts he would ever be able to walk or use his leg or paw again. My sister asked me during the drive from the animal hospital last night if I could have a look at him when we got them home, and as a healer do what I could for him.
I sat quietly with Lucky for some time with my sister watching intently. Rather than try and heal him, I instead 'listened' to his body and brain. He was laying down, unable to get up after the long drive home. I turned to my sister and said, 'you are going to feel the desire to coddle him, but what I sense is this...if you force him to learn how to adjust to his condition, his brain will heal what it can, and work around what it can't. She looked a little doubtful, so I told her to follow me to where Lucky's litter box was. Remember, he had zero use or his leg or paw since his accident on Sunday...
I set Lucky in the litter box - I could feel his bladder ready to explode when sensing his body earlier. He attempted to stand up and fell over. My sister went to help him but I held her back and just said 'watch'. He stood up again and with his one good paw he started to dig a hole to pee into. He was extremely agitated that his other paw was not working, as his one paw was doing a poor job...and he kept losing his balance...and then it happened: I felt his brain repeatedly sending the signal to the bad paw, and when it could not dig, it sent multiple signals throughout the nerves in his leg. The useless paw began to dig. It was clumsy at first, but his damaged leg and paw kept alternately working then not working.
The smile on my sister's face was almost as wonderful as having experienced the brain re-wiring her cat's nerves leading into the leg and paw. It wasn't a pretty sight, but it meant there was indeed hope that Lucky would someday regain his use of leg and paw once the brain figured out the appropriate detour through the damaged parts. I repeated for her not to coddle him, and to allow his brain at each obstacle to find a solution. No drugs, no amputation and no interference.
How much of our body's natural healing ability do you suppose we have overridden by drugs and unnecessary surgeries? It is a lesson that I learned a while back - for me to stay away from doctors and allow my body to deal with itself, as I learned to discover my Self within it. So far this approach has worked for me...from a body that already died once and revived itself. It tells me when I need to slow down using it, and when it needs a break. It tells me what foods it needs through the cravings I feel. I have gone into the medicine cabinet before and gotten a 'no', and shut the door without taking anything. I have learned to listen to it - because honestly, how does my experience of decades match up to its experience (with built in memory - DNA) of millions of years?
