The two places are different in many ways: culture, traditions, languages, size, geographical location. However, they share something in common:
1. Both witnessed great tragedies.
2. Both are battling to prevent building of worship places near the tragedy sites.
July 11, 1995 Srebrenica, Bosnia:
8,000 unarmed Bosnian Muslim boys and men were separated from their families and systematically murdered over the course of few days surrounding July 11, 1995. Their bodies were later buried in mass graves surrounding the town. 17 years later, many bodies have yet to be found. Today, local Serb authorities in Srebrenica are building a Christian Orthodox church near the site.
September 11, 2011:
3000 unarmed people, most of them American citizens, were murdered in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. None of their bodies will ever be recovered. Certain group of American Muslims are building an islamic center with a mosque built in few blocks away from ground zero.
In both cases, families of the victims and survivors are hurt. It is a slap in their faces and adding salt to the wounds that cannot heal. Why do humans do this to each other? How can people move on when someone is constantly tearing up their hearts? It is so sad Neither the mosque or the church are really appropriate. What is their purpose? Some may pray inside them, but what about survivors and victims who will be looking at those buildings every time they come to visit the site of tragedies? What message are those objects sending?
I am a Muslim, but I wound never go inside that mosque. Not because I do not want to perform prayer--I do. I pray as I am expected, and I worship Almighty SWT with all my heart and soul. However, I can do that without hurting someone else. I hope people will come to their senses.
