For all my science and Big Bang Theory nerds....

You know when you are playing billiards, golf or ping pong and you affect the direction of the ball by moving your hitting apparatus at enough of a tangent to contact the ball with some friction so as to start the orb rotating as well as moving forward so that it will arc in an opposing direction to the impact? What is the proper term to use for this if I were in England?
 
There was a film called 'Bend it like Beckham', that might be it. Or perhaps just 'curving' the ball. But I guess that's not the nerd level you where looking for.
 
It's called putting a "spin" on it. Similar in cricket and football. :)
