This question may appear rather obsurd to some, but it's one I've often pondered. Do animals have a belief structure? Do they pray? Do they care where they came from or wonder why things are the way they are? I have my theories, but at the end of the day, I can't say for sure one way or the other. I've seen animals, mostly the domesticated veriety, display some very human emotion. Happyness, sadness, anger, jealousy, love, loyalty. They even seem to have the ability to solve problems and reason to a certain extent. It's obvious to me that there is some sort of thought process at work here. Question is, to what extent? Is it pure instinct for survival or does it go much deeper than that?
This is a photo of our cat, 'Jackie Chan". He was literally drooped off on our front porch in an animal crate by persons unknown. This is him a few weeks after his arrival. On this day he accompanied me into our temple as I prepared for Diwali. Out of the blue, he walked up to the alter, put his front paws together and closed his eyes. He held that position long enough for me to snap a photo. That was the first time he'd ever been in the Temple and has not been since. He does watch from the window whenever services are taking place however.
