This question may appear rather obsurd to some, but it's one I've often pondered. Do animals have a belief structure? Do they pray? Do they care where they came from or wonder why things are the way they are? I have my theories, but at the end of the day, I can't say for sure one way or the other. I've seen animals, mostly the domesticated veriety, display some very human emotion. Happyness, sadness, anger, jealousy, love, loyalty. They even seem to have the ability to solve problems and reason to a certain extent. It's obvious to me that there is some sort of thought process at work here. Question is, to what extent? Is it pure instinct for survival or does it go much deeper than that?

This is a photo of our cat, 'Jackie Chan". He was literally drooped off on our front porch in an animal crate by persons unknown. This is him a few weeks after his arrival. On this day he accompanied me into our temple as I prepared for Diwali. Out of the blue, he walked up to the alter, put his front paws together and closed his eyes. He held that position long enough for me to snap a photo. That was the first time he'd ever been in the Temple and has not been since. He does watch from the window whenever services are taking place however.

I suspect trying to connect with a deity is a purely human endeavour.

I think we project what we know on things we would like to know. I'm not dismissing the notion of a emotional responses in animals, but that they are probably not constructed for the same purposes as our emotions and are thus different. If we felt what a sad cat is feeling, would we still call is sadness. Or is it something we can't comprehend because it's outside our experiences?

Thanks Tea, that's a really great response.

"Do Animals Have a Sense of God?"

I sometimes wonder that... though before delving into it, this question has to be answered first... "Do animals have a soul?"

My gut feeling says yes. I cannot imagine otherwise. But Christianity doesn't teach that, does it? So, in that case I'm with Hinduism on this... unless I might've missed something... Is anyone aware of any Biblical support for animals having a soul??

P.S. Nice kitty, NJ! and a cool name too!(does he do kung fu? :D) I have a cat too and I dearly love him... I've always felt a special affection to cats all my life, though I don't know why... unless I was one myself before?!?

It has been recently proven that dog and human brains react to voices in the same way. There is now a belief that dogs and humans have a very similar mechanism to process emotional information. Fascinating stuff - which comes as no surprise to those of us who closely interact with our pets on a daily basis.

Here is the article (along with a fabulous photo!):

To anyone that's ever looked into the eyes of their pet, it's as if they're looking into your very soul. In my way of thinking, they couldn't do that unless they had one themselves. No Kung Fu for Jackie. He's a gentle (soul). We call him Jackie Chan because he's like a comic Ninja. One minute he's there, the next minute he's not.

Animal like everything else in existence are manifestations of God, whether they know it or not, they are living it.

NJ, you just took the words out of my mouth! and mine is a gentle soul too :)
Not like these cats. (sorry, it's rather off topic, but I couldn't resist. :D)

Thanks for the link. Check out this one. It's the cat we had before Jackie. He's since passed, but he could talk... Hindi and English! Cat speaks Hindi - YouTube

Haha… NJ, are you pulling my leg?? It sounds like CG voice to me! (or is it really the cat talking?!?)

Is that you that’s talking to the cat in the clip? So, are you uncle suto?

The voice was not dubbed, but the audio was enhanced for clarity by lowering the noise gate and changing the pitch. That's why I myself sound a bit cartoon like on the vid. Uncle Suto does refer to me, (means uncle is sleeping in Hindi), but that was my business partner's channel.

wow, really?! then sorry for doubting you! I thought, because I put a Jedi cats video (which is totally manufactured), you did a similar thing to be funny... So, the cat indeed talked!!

Here are some other talking cats I found on YouTube... they're are adorable. :)
