Why did muslims choose the moon as their religious symbol?

perhaps, it is related to the miracle of the splitting of the moon though Mohammad (pbuh) by Allah?
the only other thing that i can think of is that it's a calendar thing. given that the arab tribes used a lunar calendar, the symbolization of the new moon, along with the Month of Power, seems to be a decent enough hypothesis at this point.
