The Top 500 Rock Albums of All time

So many to choose from.... I don't know how you even wrap your head around putting them in order of top 500.

A few that I was happy to see on the list, in no particular order: Crosby, Stills, Nash; Run DMC; Back in Black; Thriller; Elvis Presley; Dark Side of the Moon; Physical Graffiti; Muddy Waters' Anthology; Highway 61 Revisited.

Wil,

What are your top 10 albums of all time?

Steve,

Did you see one the Elvis' albums from the mid-50's made the list? And, yeah, I forgot about Thriller. You put Dark Side of the Moon but not Do You Feel or Hotel California?

(I would also put Alice's Restaurant but I doubt that made a lot of people's lists.)

Nick,

I did see that Elvis' debut album made it. I can't say I'm that surprised. Although it doesn't have a lot of his more memorable works, it was innovative for the time. I debated adding Hotel California but the fact that I had to think about it convinced me I shouldn't include it. A deserving album, even if it wouldn't be tops on my personal list.

I don't wanna die, I just wanna ride my motorcy ... cle!

I haven't gotten thru this one to see what I'd add...and would like to listen to the ones I haven't heard so I can see if I can appreciate...

I went on a massive Eagles kick 5-6 years ago and I fear I burnt myself out on them, especially Hotel California, which might be why I no longer appreciate its true greatness. Haven't listened to any of their stuff in at least half a decade. Probably time to revisit them.

Steve, many years ago I did the same thing with the Dooby Brothers. I thought they were the greatest band in the world. I listened to their music over and over and over. I got so sick of their music! I now find myself actually avoiding their music, kind of like what you are doing with the Eagles.

Dooby brothers/Eagles....each have a few good songs in my book.... but none of the popular ones strike my fancy.... I enjoy Led Zepplin till physical graffiti....Jefferson Airplane until Starship....but those two, Janis, Jimi, Doors, Turtles, Beck, Heep, Kinks, Yes, Cream, Who, Byrds, CCR, Procul Harem, ELP, Animals, Moody Blues, BBking, Orbison, Willie, War, Pink Floyd, Velvet Underground, Patsy Kline, Bob Marley, ZZtop...

I can listen to them all the time...and have for the past 50 years, (quit listening to the radio and pop music in 79) That is my rock mix...now Blues, Jazz, I have my moments as well....

My daily mix would be 50% classic (non hit) rock, 10% jazz, 15% blues, 5% old western (not country). 10% classical/baroque and 10% balladeers...

I didn't actually read Rollingstones's picks, but my personal top ten albums would be, in no particular order:

Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
The Beatles - Revolver
Crosby Stills Nash (and Young) - Greatest Hits
Queen - Killer Queen
Don McLean - American Pie
Canned Heat - The Best Of
Procol Harum - Greatest Hits
Steppinwolf - Greatest Hits
Jim Croce - Greatest Hits
Simon and Garfunkel - Greatest Hits

wil, what rubbed you the wrong way about Physical Graffiti?
I can't actually tell you...haven't listened to it since it came out... I just know at the time it felt like they turned the corner (of course I already hated stairway to heaven... It was the beginning of the end of music for me... I became disenchanted with billboard, top 40, radio...beginning right there and by the time mtv, disco and punk was raging it was over for me... I went into my cave with my albums and stayed in the late 60s early 70s since

I listened to Zeppelin in my middle teens, but as I grew older they had less and less appeal to me. Procol Harum and Steppinwolf on the other hand still pull my strings both figuratively and literally. I guess that's because I covered a lot of their tunes in my brief musical career.

I like old style rock and roll myself. Johnny O'keef, Bill Haley, Buddy Holly and such. Do you still play or rather get together with your old band mates?

I still pick up the old 6 string once in a while, but I haven't seen anyone from the band in well over 30 years. I did a solo concert in 'Best Buy' a few years ago though. They had a nice Gibson electric set up in the music department so I picked it up and did a 10 minute riff. It wasn't until I finished that I noticed my performance being broadcast on the TV wall!
How long is 'brief?'
About 5 years or so.
