I heard somewhere recently that an ancient text spoke of a separation of two tribes, two brothers, one who farmed the land and one who kept animals ... the parallels with Cain and Abel were marked, but for the life of me, I've forgotten where I heard it, and so what culture produced it.

Any ideas?

Sounds like an Australian Aboriginal tale. Some of the Dreamtime is pretty close to the book of Genesis. Although there's is told in song, ancient carvings and paintings rather than written text.

I think that might be it! We have a TV series called 'cleverman' which is a sci-fi based on Aboriginal mythology, I think I checked it on wiki and that's when the two tribes thing came up.

Really, really interesting as it seems pretty likely there was no cross-referencing between Hebrew and Aus. aboriginal cultures.

Always interesting to me how Aboriginal stories are ofttimes referred to as mythology by non-Aboriginals. In my experience, most of what gets labeled mythology is not Aboriginal at all, but rather an outsider's interpretation. The rainbow serpent bit is a good example. As I've said, some of the Dreamtime stories are pretty damn close to Genesis. We have creation, emanating from the earth itself in their version. God, satin, angels even some spot on Adamic references. All from people who, for all intent and purpose, were isolated from the rest of the world for thousands of years.

If you can point me towards any of that, I'd be interested.

Lots of information out there describing dreamtime, but I've yet to find anything myself that aligns with the stories I've heard directly from Aboriginal people working and living on our farm.

That's one of the reasons when Steve asked me a while back to start a thread on the subject, I was reluctant to do so. As most of what I know tends to contradict other information available. Here's a link to the thread I started though: http://www.interfaith.org/community/threads/17697/
