"The month of Ramadan is that in which The Quran was sent down, a Hudan (Guidance) for humankind, a Bayyinat (Clear Evidence) and a Furqan (Criterion); So whosoever of you witnesses the month will fast therein and whosoever is ill or on a journey [will fast] the same number of other days. Allah desires ease for you and He does not desire hardship for you in completing the number [of days] - and that you may glorify Allah for Him guiding you and that perhaps you may be thankful."

(Quran 2:185)

Ramadan begins for us in the Western Hemisphere at Sunset (Maghrib) on May15th - the first day of fasting begins May 16th.

The beginning of the Prophetic Mission of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

In 610 c.e. during the month of Ramadan, Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah was meditating in a cave just outside Mecca. Retreating to this cave during this month had become an annual practice for him.

One night during the last 10 days of this month the Angel Jibril/Gabriel (as) appeared to Muhammad and said "Iqra" - meaning "Read", "Recite" and "Proclaim".

The Angel then revealed the first five Ayat (Verses) of The Quran:

1. Iqra (Read!) In the Name of your Lord, Who has created,

2. Created Humankind from a Clot.

3. Iqra (Read!) And your Lord is The Most Generous,

4. Who has taught by the Pen,

5. Has taught Humankind that which he knew not.

These are the first five verses of Surah 96 called 'Alaq (Clot), which has a total of 19 Verses.


Iqra (the first word revealed) comes from the same root as Quran - meaning "Reading", "Recitation".

So to say "The Holy Quran", is to say "The Holy/Sacred Recitation, Reading or Proclamation".

It is believed that The Quran was sent down in one of the odd number nights during the last 10 days of the month of Ramadan.

This night is known as Laylat-ul Qadr (The Night of Power).

The following Surah - 97 - was revealed about that Night. It is called Qadr (Power)

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ

لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ

تَنَزَّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍ

سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّى مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ

1. Surely, We sent it down on the Night of Power
2. And what makes you know what the Night of Power is?
3. The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.
4. The Angels and the Spirit descend therein by their Lord's permission for every affair.
5. Peace! It is until the rising of the dawn.
