Particle physicists want money for bigger collider

What the Europeans will do is harder to predict, because
a lot depends on who has influential friends in which ministry.
But I think particle physicists have dug their own grave by giving
the public the impression that the LHC would answer some
big question, and then not being able to deliver.

Hi Socrat44 —

Yes, we in Europe have a fair amount on our plates at the moment.

But no doubt the science community will dig out footage of the late Stephen Hawking in support of their campaign.

When you think how much science spends compared to the military...

I do wonder whether physics might have other priorities right now, though. Carbon capture? Global warming generally.

The 'big question' in the not-too-distant future is how did we let ourselves get into this mess?

Oh no. Not at all. Imo. The LHC delivered the Higgs boson as it was planned to do. That was huge. It completed the standard model.

It didn't find super-symmetric particles, but that is string theory's problem.
