Cobblers Apprentice aka Tariki

Now up to about 30 posts as a "newbie" but I was here before as Tariki. I did reveal this in one post somewhere, on an old Thomas Merton thread. Well, I fancied a change of name.

Not really much into wearing labels, but I feel a debt to Pure Land Buddhism so thats what I call myself, a Pure Land Buddhist. Their "saints" are called myokonin, and one of them was Saichi, a cobbler by trade. I love his "mystical" out-pourings in his Journals, a lot have been translated and made known by D T Suzuki. One of his sayings was that "gratitude is all a lie, there is nothing the matter with one". I think I know what he meant, but I'm not there yet. So, "Cobblers Apprentice".

Seems a bit slow here, which is nice at times.

Welcome!

Indulging in one-upmanship, I'll offer a translated German proverb: The cobbler's children always go barefoot.

Many Zen masters, Western and Eastern, have been stumbling and reeling under the power and privilege of their office. Is that an issue with Pure Land priesthood, as well?

I would say it is an issue everywhere. One enlightened Tibetan master, living in the USA, ended up driving his car into a brick wall in a drunken stupor. Not quite sure what that is a reflection of.......Tibetan Buddhism, Enlightenment or just American society in general.

But consideration could possibly be given to the zen koan:- "A clearly enlightened person falls into the well. How is this so?"

Enough about cobblers for now.

There are days with no activity at all. But it chugs along. It's a thoughtful site. All your posts are read by a lot more people than those who actively participate. There's a cloud of lurkers out there, lol.

Ah ha! Lurkers! NOW you're talking!

The lurkers support me in PM
I wish more people would participate in the forum discussions; it's always the same few people participating, its quite a small site and without them there wouldn't be anything for the lurkers to read ;)

I'm all for getting more people participating and new voices. And I'm open to suggestions.
