Do we as functional human beings have the right to fix people when they are unable to care for themselves? To a degree, yes, however, it is not the destiny of those capable to be reliant on another. As a former drug and alcohol counselor and present day peer support specialist my role has always been to provide minimum support while encouraging client self-reliance and independence.
The old cliche; it is better to teach a man how to fish than to bring him fish everyday to eat. I give myself freely to people in need, however, I cannot be responsible for people's choices in life.
Choose your battles.
