It actually deliberately accelerates to twelve thousand miles an hour before hitting the atmosphere, in order to create the necessary drag/lift ratio seven minutes before touchdown, and finally lands by deploying a sky-crane that flies away afterwards. Astounding engineering! What clever people we are.
