@badger made some compelling points in their thread on the writing forum about off-topic discussion.

While tangential discussion does make some sense in threads that are receiving no other traffic, it seems that the new sub-forum is meant to showcase the writing of particular users. As such, I wonder if it might be beneficial to be more strict about on-topic discussion in this particular sub-forum going forward.

This sub-forum is still a rather new addition to the site so I think this would set a productive precedent in the future as more threads are made.

Personally, I would specifically suggest that all replies in a thread (within the writing sub-forum) directly mention the writing showcased in that thread or exist as direct responses to the OP. Any other discussion that one wishes to have within that thread could then be posted to a new thread in a relevant sub-forum instead.

Admittedly, this solution is a little complicated and there might be a better approach but I think it could be adequate.

@Ella S.
This is a relatively small community.
If a person would prefer not to have any comments from a particular poster on their "writing thread",
they only have to say. :)

It's my fault for taking @badger thread off-track. I apologise. On the other hand the writing forum is not a blog site; it is included in the discussion forums? People comment on the subject and on these forums it does tend to wander? Sorry again ...

I am not advocating for stagnating discussion but for keeping discussion in specific threads more on-topic by providing criteria for when a particular reply might merit a separate thread. Perhaps I will keep it to myself as my own general rule of thumb.

Why don't you post a thread of your own writing in the writing forum, Ella?
