Something to consider . . .
Our right temporal lobe and the associated limbic lobe are the hub of the 'god' experience, a designed divine agency, the human brain evolved to produce a sense of surrender and connectedness with the universe and/or a higher being. There are portions of the brain now known by neuroscience to coincide with religious and spiritual experiences. Religion and spirituality adapted from an evolutionary perspective to help humans control their environment, provide a stable social structure, and elaborate a system of morals.
Otherworldly "presences" are not uncommon and in no way negatively reflect on the person having these experiences. It is a normal and natural happening to a dis-inhibited temporal lobe. Temporal lobe psychosis can and usually does result in some kind of spiritual agency, where creatures, deities, spirits, angels, and the demonic become present in the person's mind.
"A sensed presence is a very real, perceptual experience for those individuals who have experienced it, and it can be very hard to convince them that it was anything other than what they believe it to be. It is triggered by what is called the 'agency-detection mechanism'.
