I do not think a unity in our diversity is ultimately possible while the veils of many doctrines are still raised and while materialism runs wild and unchecked.

This is a topic difficult for many, as nature and nurture have moulded lives and a way of thought to specific religious Doctrines and material security, the erroneous potential of some, easier to identify then others.

Thus the bounty of the age we live in, where we are also gifted science to balance faith, and faith to balance science. Then to add complexity to the mix we are faced with Materialism, which veils both true faith and science.

This is indeed a day that is reflected in past Prophecy, 2 Timothy 3 can be reflected upon and it offers in the closing thoughts.

".....16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works..."

So is it time for doctrine to be submitted for ".....reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:..."?

That is Paul speaking to believers of Jesus Christ the ONLY begotten Son of the Father.. the Word and the Great I AM of scripture inspired and breathed by the Holy Spirit.

I think it prudent to add the verses proceeding this choice bit you picked.

2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

The quoted biblical passages are great and embraced.

Your opening comments are what this OP is all about.

There are at least a couple of different meanings of the word materialism.

Which meaning did you have in mind?
I see anything that takes our thoughts and actions away from God given morals and laws is a materialistic tendency.

Materialism does not mean that we are not able to have a free economic system, as this is required. It depends on our attachment to things of this world.

When people talk about materialism, sometimes they mean being overly materialistic and valuing wealth, money, objects, and things.

Sometimes when people are talking about religion and philosophy, they use the word materialism to indicate the belief that only the material world exists, and not anything spiritual or supernatural.

Since those carry different implications I was wondering which you referred to. I guess you are leaning more towards the meaning of over valuing money or possessions.
