Looking at them I notice that there are lines that say ".png" so there are the signature for a png file but I also do not see any images.

It's all gone - I couldn't do a full server move so had to rebuild the forums from scratch. Anything that shows as lost is unfortunately gone.The images are actually on the server .. it might be something to do with settings

No .. the images are still on the server.
..but they are not being shown in the posts for some reason.
The database files should not have been modified .. see How attachments are stored in XenForo

It used to be the case that images could be saved either in the database or the server. Anything in the database was safe, but anything saved to the server is gone. For example, one of the missing images should be found with this link:

Well, you couldn't have looked very hard, because I know they are there.

If any were still present it should be easy to link to them. If they can't be linked to then I would have thought that suggested either a problem with the forum software itself, or else the attachments are missing.
I don't see any mileage in trying to edit and tidy up threads a few years old. Discussion moves on, am sure you'll get the opportunity to use any such images again.
