Levitical Dietary Laws and Galatians 2:14

Ok, so the thread's gone off on a tangent. But you are not addressing me. I'm saying the 'dietary' laws of most religions entail denying oneself certain foods, or whatever, that are normally available. That is a sacrifice -- giving something up for God? The Pythagorean cult believed it was wrong to eat beans.
Sorry, but I'm fairly kosher, and it's not a sacrifice. But if you want to continue to impute that to me, I can't stop you.

I disagree. I believe most dietary laws, most rules, laws, sins, comamndmente descibed in religions had to do with the health and welfare of the community at that time.
Ok. But the self-restriction is in obedience to a divine command. A material option is dropped in favour of spiritual benefit, or to avoid divine retribution, which is another direction altogether.

Well it helps to make what I have to do into what I want to do. Many folks avoid certain foods they believe are impure or not good for them.

EDIT: It's one thing if I wake up one morning and decide for myself that eating beans is bad, and so I won't do it. It's another thing if Pythagoras commands me not to eat beans because that's just what Pythagoras commands. I defer the pleasure I receive from eating beans for the favour I receive from Pythagoras -- or to avoid his censure and punishment?

Pythagoras only demands one of us be right and the other two not be obtuse.

The hindu gods (or others implied they) determined that the cow was holy...to me the leaders of the overcrowded state new without cows the fields would not get plowed and cheese would not get made.... just like not crossing rivers kept the plagues and epidemics.

The dietary restrictions kept the community healthier, just as the ten commandments did...

If we impose a rule which we attribute not to a leader but an invisible authority that supercedes all leaders forever and came before all past great leaders and add a punishment which will not only affect you during your l life but after you die and for eternity....that in itself is what was a major player in causing me to discount the rest of the story (and look for the reasons behind the stories)
