I apologize if either of these topics have already been covered but I thought that these forums seemed ideal to bring them up.

First of all, I'm 33, missing 3 classes to complete my BS in Business Management, but would like to finally turn my attentions to the subject which interests me most (far, far more than business ever has or will) - Comparative Religion and Mythology. Does anyone know of any degree programs in these disciplines? I cannot afford to attend a private college (and my husband makes too much for me to get financial aid) so I'm looking for a program in a somewhat affordable college or university (I live in Texas, so something here would be ideal). I'd greatly appreciate any guidance in this matter.

Secondly, I was wondering if those of you who frequent this board have discovered the magnificent new HBO series, Carnivale. It is a fantastic show, the absolute best that I have ever had the pleasure of watching, and it deals with many intertwining religious myths - the theme of the show is an ultimate showdown between the dark and the light (to sum it up very incompletely). I believe that anyone who is interested in reading these forums would be enthralled by the show and the discussion it generates. The best places to learn more are at www.hbo.com and www.carnivale.org but the most intriguing discussions (and recaps of each show) are available at www.televisionwithoutpity.com. I believe they are showing the most recent episodes in a mini marathon sometime this week and I hope y'all will check it out. I am just entranced and addicted to this show!

Anyway, love your site here, and hope that someone can direct me towards a school where I can study my passions, religion and mythology (comparative, of course, since I am an agnostic). Thank you very much!

Hi Moonchild and welcome to CR. :)

Not sure about study courses - or even the show - as I'm over here in the UK. If any of the US members have any ideas then I some some comments can be posted. :)

I don't know about in Texas (I do know a few people online on another list I belong to who might be helpful, though, if you wouldn't mind me asking them) but here at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, we have a program (I'm not sure if it's a certificate program or a degree program) in comparative religion (I know a couple of the instructors for some of the classes and I took five or six of them.) If you'd like, I could try to send the link for the schedule for you to peruse at your convenience. :)

Thanks so much! I would really appreciate it if you could ask around and see what you can find out about degrees in related fields in the Texas area. One of my best friends actually lives in Oconomowoc, outside Milwaukee, but I don't think my husband would be too taken with the idea of me moving up there for a year or so to study (he likes having me here at home ;)). Any advice you can give would be great!

Also, thanks to both of you, I, Brian and Phyllis Sidhe_Uaine, for the warm welcome!

No problem - simply hope things work out alright for you.

I can certainly appreciate the difficulties of taking no a degree among so many other responsibilities - not least with regards to children and financial issues. I'd love to take some specific degree course, but it's either the travel or the outright financial impact that makes such study seem impractical to myself.
