A still inexplicable phenomenon, it would be interesting to note whether there are any real dangers we face as a civilisation in the event of a complete switch of the Earth's magnetic field:

Namaste Brian,

when it happens, and we are overdue for it, it will render useless our compasses and the majority of the less sophsiticated navigational instruments.

eh... who knows though if it will be a problem when it happens.. it's quite possible that our technology will be sufficient that we won't need a magnetic guide for navigation much longer in any event.
