Hi,

I'm a Christian living in the Outer Hebrides, UK. I use many ideas and practices from Hinduism. I am also beginning to explore the Muslim faith (following an experience last week; my girlfriend was ill and I opened the Koran at random to find a verse I found very useful at the time).

Currently I'm searching for a book/document which parallels the Bible and Bhagavad-Gita/Srimad Bhagavatam (or any other Vedic text). Help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to CR, nice to have you here. May I ask what the verse was from the Quran, if you can remember?

I should have written it down... but didn't. I can't find it!

Ah well, it'll probably turn up one day... when I least expect/want it to.

If you can provide the jist of the scripture MW may be able to decipher the actual...

And I think it'll show up exactly when you need it again!

No problem I was just interested to know. If you come across it again or as Wil says can give me the jist of it, just let me know.

I am happy you found it helpful in the situation you found yourself in.

Salaam

Heya, falin, and welcome to CR. :)
Have you ever considered comparing the Bhagavad-Gita with the book of Revelations? ;) (along the theme of 'great battles')

Hi falin

I suppose it depends on how technical you want to get.

For the best comparisons, you might try looking at René Guénon and Frithjof Schuon ... but they are both from the standpoint of metaphysics, so outline the complementarity of principles, rather than comparative commentaries.

Guénon wrote:
Introduction to the Study of the Hindu Doctrines
Man and His Becoming According to the Vedanta
The Multiple States of the Being
The Symbolism of the Cross

All of which draw parallels between Hindu and Christian doctrines (and I think Islamic, I'd have to check).

Frithjof Schuon wrote:
The Transcendent Unity of Religions
Spiritual Perspectives and Human Facts
Understanding Islam
Sufism: Veil and Quintessence
Christianity/Islam

Schuon tends to utilise Sufi/Moslem metaphysical principles as a comparator, whereas Guénon uses the Vedas, but both men ended up Sufi.

I highlight these two because it is rare to find someone who writes on comparative religion who is acknowledged by those religions as possessing a real and profound understanding — The Islamic Bookshop in London praised Schuon's 'Understanding Islam' for example.

But they are 'technical' reading — metaphysical and philosophical — you either get on with them, or you dont.

Look round on the web for samples, but if you don't get anywhere, let me know and I'll try and scan some stuff for you ... I doubt your 'local library' will carry such stuff!
