I have a book called Demons and Politics (Willow Publications) which talks about this and does a good job of looking for relevant passages and has a very solid and believable system. Mark is seen as the gospel with a strong political aspect, and the author draws out its distinctions. He also discusses this story of Jesus and Legion at some length, drawing on previous scholarship and adding his own opinion. The book has a nice bibliography, too.

I want to mention this alternative interpretation.

If we are taking this passage symbolically (and I think we are in this thread), then the pigs represent the idolatry of the Romans that has been oppressing Israel. Jesus is the liberator. There are certain similarities between the story and the story of the Red Sea: The pigs run into the sea and are drowned, like the Egyptians drowned in the Red Sea. When the pigs are drowned the surrounding people are afraid, just like they were afraid when the Egyptians drowned. There also appear to be allusions in this story to the criticism in Isaiah 65, where in verse 4 the people are described as swine-eaters. This means its calling them idolatrous (but not pigs themselves). Then in the story we have Jesus driving out the pigs, so he's cleansing the land of idolatry. Mark is putting Jesus forward as the liberator of Israel from the Roman idolatry. The spirits possessing the man were called Legion, which could be taken as a reference to the Roman legions. There are also indications that he's not presuming all the Jews here to be idolatrous but the picture he draws is that they are surrounded by idolatry, flooded by it.

Zechariah 13:2 says "And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land."

Again, this is a specious arguement. Filled with distortions (how you get from "neither fly to the land" to pigs) or lies (Qur'anic passages that depict an angry God transforming Jews into apes and pigs). Do you understand the concepts of meaning and truthfulness?

We can test what you write against the world as it is. We can read the Quran (see People of the Book see 2:62 and 3:64 or the fact that 16:115 forbids Muslims prok also) We can read you ("Assyrians and Babylonians were semitic so they could not be anti-semitic" versus Jesus and Josephus, who you might note were Jews and therefor every bit as semitic as the Assyrians).

Furthermore, we could take the gambit and go through what "Jesus" means from an entymological point of view, but sense you keep confusing what you think or Greek or Latin coincidences I shan't waste my time (see Etymology of the Name at Jesus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Okay, let me get this straight, Josephus (a Jew) showed the Jews were evil, leading to the Jewish Revolt of 70. Okay, Mithras was a warrior's god associated with the Sun (in the middle Zoroastrian period he is the sun god) and the Bull (associated in the very earliest texts) both were definately in use prior to 500 BCE.

Surely you are not implying the cross vice the fish was in use prior to 70 (when Titus Flavius destroyed it, but before Sextus Julius Severus made the newly named Palestine "Juden-frei"in 132). Interestingly, the rift between Christianity and Judaism probably dates to the third war period.

2) if it did it had no connection to the historically validated Mithric rites of the Legion (it predates Caeser by half a millenia or so)

4) that the cross on any of these coins you have found is anything but, oh, coincidence.
