A precursor to a WWIII has certainly developed in the areas you mention and of course many others. I think the radical Islamic terrorist are the most present danger. Of course, I have no facts but simply ideas. If Putin gets really pissed - no telling what he will do. Oh there are several.
Preferably the West could stay clear but tell that to the French, the British. For that matter I will include all of the Nato partners except Turkey. You just cannot expect the West to stay clear. Without the West there is no long term solution otherwise.
I do not say that we haven't made mistakes intervening throughout history but we have now made our bed.
