Salam ,

I have got some questions , regarding Arab/Islamic stuff.

1 . What is the meaning of Islam . Is it peace or submission , or both . Is the root word for Islam the same as that for Assalam o alikum or different . In detail plz ?

2 . What is the meaning of Allah . And what are the origins of this word . Did it come from Abraham , or even before ( reference? ). Is the hebrew word EL has got a similar origins . And what are the pre-islamic arab traditions/beliefs associated with this word . And whats the story of moon-god ??

3 . Was kaaba built for the first time by Abraham & Ishmael , or was it built even b4 them . I have heard that the Hijr-e-Aswad was first time brought by Jibrael to earth b4 the birth of Adam , & wherever its light could be seen , that area was included in Meeqat . Is it true ?

Salam

1) Islam means total subission to The One, Only God. Salam is peace.

2)Allah in Arabic language means The God. This Holy Name is used most of the time because it signifies the Oness of God. There are books on the origins of God's Names/Attributes and you can search for them. If I find any, I will let you know.

3) In the ancient Arabia/pre-islamic era, Arabs believed that Allah was the High God with Whom it was 'impossible' to be in contact with without someone to mediate in between. That is why they invented idols and assigned 'powers' and rituals to different dieties, including Allah. The Arabs believed that their pagan faith was of Abrahamic origin.

4)The Qur'an teaches that the origin of the world started with one man and one woman, Adam s.a.v.s. and his wife Eve r.a. In total, Qur'an mentions 124,000 God's messangers but only the most known ones (Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, Abraham, Noah and some others, peace be upon them, are mentinoned by names). The Qur'an teaches that all groups of people were blessed by a messanger of God, but many of the teachings were lost through the history. Islam considers all previous teachings (including Judaism and Christianity) to be the early stages of Islam. Muslims recognize the earlier Holy Scriptures and revere them as the Word of God.

What is the meaning of Islam . Is it peace or submission , or both
First Arabic is a rich language. One word has got several different meanings.Islam is derived from the Arabic root "Salema" which means peace, purity, submission and obedience.
The term Islam is related to the Syriac 'aslem which means "to make peace, surrender" and that in turn appears to be derived from the Semtic stem of *slem which means to be complete.

Is the root word for Islam the same as that for Assalam o alikum or different . In detail plz ?
The answer would be yes in a sense.Since the root word for islam and salaam means peace so both are same. But if your q were

The answer would be no.

Asalam-o-oalikum means peace be upon you and salaam is an arabic word that literally means "peace.".Since the root word salam is different than salema, aslem therefore they r different.

What is the meaning of Allah . And what are the origins of this word .
Allah means God in english And God means Allah in arabic.Allah is the true personal name for God chosen by him.

From britannica
"Etymologically, the name Allah is probably a contraction of the Arabic al-Ilah, “the God.” The name's origin can be traced back to the earliest Semitic writings in which the word for god was Il or El, the latter being an Old Testament synonym for Yahweh. Allah is the standard Arabic word for “God” and is used by Arab Christians."

We believe the reverse. The first man Adam used the name Allah for God.As the time passes the childrens of adam forgot Allah original message and started calling it by different names.
If you were to find a perfect authentic old testament of bible in hebrew you will find the word Allah. As the time passed people started twisting their books in an effort to stray away from new message Quran.First they choose the word Ala.Oh doesnot it sound like Allah, yes so they changed it to Ela.Still it sound like allah so change it to Ele.And then finally they changed it to El or IL.I have confirmed the names Ela and Ele in some old version of bible not by myself but from my christians fellow.

I would not know. The following verse of quran just says Kabah was built by God or his angels probably before abraham.

"And (remember) when We made the House (the Ka'bah at Makkah) a place of resort for mankind and a place of safety. And take you (people) the Maqâm (place) of Ibrâhim (Abraham) as a place of prayer , and We commanded Ibrâhim (Abraham) and Ismâ'il (Ishmael) that they should purify My House (the Ka'bah at Makkah) for those who are circumambulating it, or staying (I'tikâf), or bowing or prostrating themselves (there, in prayer)." Quran 2:125

I am not an arabic or scholar. So the above explanation can be faulty.I tried to make it as accurate as i can.

According to Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid:
If you refer to Arabic language dictionaries, you will find out that the meaning of the word Islam is: submission, humbling oneself, and obeying commands and heeding prohibitions without objection, sincerely worshipping Allaah alone, believing what He tells us and having faith in Him. The word Islam has become the name of the religion which was brought by Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
Why is this religion called Islam? For all the religions on earth are called by various names, either the name of a specific man or a specific nation. So Christianity takes its name from Christ; Buddhism takes its name from its founder, the Buddha; the Zoroastrians became well known by this name because their founder and standard-bearer was Zoroaster. Similarly, Judaism took its name from a tribe known as Yehudah (Judah), so it became known as Judaism. And so on. Except for Islam, for it is not attributed to any specific man or to any specific nation, rather its name refers to the meaning of the word Islam. What this name indicates is that the establishment and founding of this religion was not the work of one particular man and that it is not only for one particular nation to the exclusion of all others. Rather its aim is give the attribute implied by the word Islam to all the peoples of the earth. So everyone who acquires this attribute, whether he is from the past or the present, is a Muslim, and everyone who acquires this attribute in the future will also be a Muslim. [From Kitaab al-Islam Usooluhu wa Mabaadi’uhu by Dr. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Saalih al-Suhaym]

According to Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid:
The blessed name "Allaah" is derived from the Arabic verb alaha/ya’lahu/ma’looh [the root of which is the three letters alif, laam, haa’]. This verb includes the meaning of love as well as worship. Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, is the One Who is loved, glorified and feared by the believers, and they put their hope in Him.

Hope this helps.
And Allah knows best.

PluckyAli--whatever.
I grew up with Islam and have been learning a lot about it since I became a re-born again Muslim.
If you allow yourself to see the side of "Islam" that some practice and not the true meaning of it, then I say to you: A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE IS A DANGEROUS THING.

That seems a little at odds with my previous reading of the Qur'an, especially where it recommends learning.

What you mean by whatever?.If i am wrong then you will have to tell me how i am wrong(like i told you islam means peace, submission, not just peace, not just submission). If i am right then you have to agree with me.You know what i am talking?

That's a good thing amica. What made you re-born again? We all muslims need to be re-born.

You know what i believe,if we stop assuming bout each other, many problems can be solved.I don't understand why do you have to assume i see the side of islam that some people practise?.Or you just wanted to take revenge from me?.
