Habemus Papam!

Well, looks like we got another "woke" Pope! Big on beatitudes, forgiveness, concerned for poor in all nations and religions... if this keeps up will be better for our world!
What is the definition of woke?
Nobody can ever say
(with your line about beatitudes you're at least inclining towards defining)
but the word woke always seems to be used for people whose hearts are in the right place.

I can't verify this one anywhere...

Woke to me is beatitudes, turn the other cheek, see things from the view of the oppressed, empathy.

To others it is a derogatory epithet, but I don't know what they would.say their definition is.

No, I think it's fake ... bit the sentiment is not far off!

Certain quarters of the American political spectrum have gone into meltdown, apparently, over the election of another 'woke total Marxist' pope like Francis ... apparently the idea of such leading the Catholic Church is 'gross' in their eyes ...

I agree, can't find it anywhere, if it IS a translation of one of his speeches it is loose and generous with modern phraseology....like the Manga bible...

That's it, nobody can define it.
Woke used to mean not asleep.
If not woke, wake up?

Woke emerged from the Black American community with regard to their experience –

Marcus Garvey said “Wake up Ethiopia! Wake up Africa!” as a call to the global Black community to become more socially and politically conscious.

In 1938 the phrase 'stay woke' was in the lyrics of “Scottsboro Boys,” a song by Huddie Ledbetter, aka Lead Belly, describing the 1931 arrest of nine black teenagers in Scottsboro, Arkansas, accused of raping two white women – the whole trial saga is just a rolling story of racist misjustice ... it's worth checking out just for the shock value.

As a Brit I would say the term 'woke' is used here in a pejorative sense to describe socially aware individuals who challenge the status quo, particularly regarding immigration, but notably the review of British History that paints a glowing image of what was largely piracy sanctioned by the Crown. A notable example is how the right really doesn't like people pointing out that some of our biggest and most respected institutions were built on fortunes acquired through slavery ...

Correct.

the term 'woke' is used here in a pejorative sense to describe socially aware individuals who challenge the status quo,
Also what happens here

What I am curious about is what people mean or think they mean when they use the word now. What is the new definition?
It may be different depending the ideology of the person using it the term, or maybe not.

People who use the term "woke" in some kind of disapproving or pejorative manner -what do they think they are talking about? What do they believe they are critiquing? I mean I guess it's like those that used to say "bLeEdInG hEaRt LiBeRaL" with such disapproval, back in the day, as if the so called "bleeding hearts" upset them somehow.

If history doesn't trouble you....you aren't reading history...

Yes, woke is a pejorative for acting as Jesus prescribed....go figure who uses it in that manner the most, Christians
