America in the Dead Sea Scrolls

I have discovered dates, names, and events that link the original American Woodstock festival of 1969 and at least one of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Woodstock was originally to be held in Wallkill, NY on 8/15, 16, & 17/69, but the people there did not like the hippie crowd and they protested. So, Woodstock ended up being held in Bethel, NY on 8/15, 16, & 17/69. I Kings ch. 12, in the Bible tells about another sinful and misguided festival, which was held in Bethel on 8/15. Some have pointed out that the calendar used to schedule Woodstock was not the same calendar used to schedule the festival in I Kings. I take this as a sign of just how unimportant a particular calendar is to God. This same line of thinking has caused me to come to the conclusion, about what makes a land Holy. Any land is as holy as another, it is the things people do in a land at present, that make a land Holy. The original author of about 100 B.C. interpreted several Bible verses. One of those verses is Micah 2; 11. In my modern Catholic Bible(I do not believe in every Catholic practice), Micah 2; 11 reads, "If one acting on impulse should make the futile claim: "I pour you wine and strong drink as my prophecy," then he would be the prophet of this people." Concerning this verse the scroll author wrote about a, "follower of the wind, one who raised storms and rained down lies, had preached to them(Mic. 2; 11), against all of whose assembly the anger of God was kindled." At Woodstock Joe Cocker sang, Lets Go Get Stoned, and then, With A Little Help From My Friends. Just seconds after Joe was finished singing, it began to rain. A witness recalled that there was no rain forcasted for that day. These two songs give a negative and a positive message, and therefore constitute a following of the wind. Joe should not be considered the anti-Christ or anything like that, but just another lost sheep with a microphone and lots of listeners. The words, their wine is their ways, are also in the scroll. There are two kinds of wine involved. The other wine is the thinking that we as individuals and thereby the world can not change OUR sinful ways.

The situation reminds me of a saying from Jesus, taken from Gnostic Gospel, the Gospel of Thomas: "If those who lead you say to you: See the kingdom is in heaven, then the birds of heaven will precede you. If they say to you: It is in the sea, then the fish will precede you. But the kingdom is within you and it is with out you. If you know yourselves, then you will be known and you will be known as sons of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you are in poverty and you are poverty. In America, in the late 60's and early 70's, there was a primarily unorganized group of young people known as hippies and some were known as Jesus freaks. The people in the scroll, known as scoffers, roughly equate to people known as yuppies in the late 1960's and early 70's. Instead of encouraging the dreams of peace and harmony of the hippies , drugs and chemical dependency quelled real progress in the peace and harmony social movement. The scroll mentions this with the words, for they sought smooth things and preferred illusions. These among other lines lead me to believe that the scroll is telling about the times that we are living in. Whether it is a first time happening or a history repeating itself, these words should be heeded.

Here is yet another portion of the scroll. Interpreted, these are the three nets of Satan with which Levi son of Jacob said that he catches Israel by setting them up as three kinds of righteousness. The first is riches, the second is fornication, and the third is profanation of the Temple. Whoever escapes the first is caught in the second, and whoever saves himself from the second is caught in the third(Isa. 24). In America and in much of the world these things have gone from being social taboo's to being virtual forms of righteousness, since the early 1970's. (1) Lotteries, casinos and personal debt have risen. There is at least one casino in nearly every state. (2) There is the simultaneous popularity of teen pregnancy, abortion, and sexual stimulants. (3) Now we have the exaltation of homosexual clergymen, and the sanctioning of same sex marriage.

In yet another portion of the scroll: This was the time of which it is written, Like a stubborn heifer thus was Israel stubborn(Hos. 4; 16), when the Scoffer arose who shed over Israel the waters of lies. He led them astay in a wilderness without way by bringing low the everlasting hills, and by causing them to depart from the paths of righteousness... Because of the huge crowds at Woodstock performers had to be flown in by helicopter. If the author or authors of this scroll had visions of the distant future, the words, bringing low the everlasting hills, might be the best way could describe what he saw.

Oh, you bring back memories. That was one GREAT weekend!!.

I drove my brother and a friend of his there. We were heading east along the New York State Thruway and had no idea of the crowds coming from the coast. It took us 8 hours to reach the turn-off to Bethel. We got there about 2 pm and saw the line-up of cars. Didn't even think they were for the festival as it wasn't scheduled to start until evening. But it was. It took me another 6 hours to crawl the 12 miles to the parking area.

But it was a great time, rain and all. And the Joe Cocker gig was not the only time it rained. There were several showers.

America and the Dead Sea Scrolls

With works as complex as religious tracts and Shakespear, it is possible to link them to almost anything - particularly musical, as a great deal of music is still based on these works, or second hand references to it.

The trouble is that a lot of religious and spiritual commnuication is written in metaphor and symbolism - at some point somebody somewhere is going to be able to draw a superficial connection between any two events/objects with just a little juggling of the interpretation.

As for the original poster - he dumped this on us twice, but I left it up this time because there was a reply, and also the potential for discussion. I removed the link, though, as "dump and run" posters simply promoting their sites do not tend to be favourite visitors of webmasters. :)

Very true. I have recently thought of America as the "Babylon [that] will fall" from Revelation, but I know that could easily be strecthing things (then again, who knows?).

Also, I have read a sort scholarly introduction to Revelation in a Catholic Bible that explains a little about the context in which it was written. The scholar said that it was not originally written as a prohpecy but as guide to how believers should conduct themselves under Roman persecution. Sort of adds a new perspective, I think.

I've also thought this, however: The author of Revelation may not have known he was writing prophecy as such and it could still be.

This is all speculation on my part, of course. :)

very interesting.....as the temple is the self in my understanding, behold ye are the temple of GOD.

Does anyone other than North Americans believe that there are pieces in the Hebrew text specifically about the United States (other than those who have decided that the Apocalipse will occurr there?)

Prophecy is like it's own Rorsharch test - you see patterns according to your own motivations and predispositions. Also - prophecy has a funny way of sometimes being applied not to a specific single example, but instead as a cyclical pattern.

I've seen these kinds of analysis before (ussually that America is Rome but prophecy often has many sides) but with all these examinations it is always the circumstance of the Day that is being paralled rather than the Point of the Day.

If some of this is a true analsys where is the Christianity of this Day?? Aught not that be the focus? It is the point isn't it?

Kinda like this one group claiming that archeologists had found a Roman complex in Texas or proof that the ancient Hebrews landed in the New World and made it to what is now Ohio, mingling with the original inhabitants (the evidence for the latter is supposed to be a particular mound that, when viewed from above, looks like an ancient hannukiah, what most people refer to as a menorah.) *le shrug*

Good point. I'm one North American who feels we tend to overplay our importance on the world stage, military and economic power notwithstanding. I don't believe the Bible refers to North America at all, for the simple reason that, inspired or not, the writers knew nothing of the existence of the entire New World.
But the belief in the religious significance of North America (the USA, specifically--Canadians, bless their hearts, tend to lack the hubris necessary for grandiose self-delusion) isn't that surprising when considering the beliefs and motives of the first intentionally Christian settlements here. Refugees from the Restoration of the English Crown, they saw the wilds of North America as a new Garden of Eden, fertile soil on which to found the New Jerusalem. This country was to be the fulfillment of prphecy and the destiny of the Christian Church--Heaven on Earth.
This belief dovetailed very neatly with the purely secular ambitions of many immigrants, and the social and political agendas of the American sons of the Enlightenment. The very real desire of the early settlers to make a pure, new holy land was transmuted into the civil religion of the emerging United States, and gave a theological underpinning to the philosophy of westward expansion, Manifest Destiny,
That sense of North America and the American people as being God's instrument in history continies to this day--
