If you were to read one book by him I'd suggest one of the short story collections. Some people say his short stories are the best vehicle for his writing. If the word "dystopia" did not exist it would have had to have been invented for Ballard. His vision, his imagination, his dispassionate examination of the inner space of the mind is unsurpassed.
N.B. His autobiography (Empire of the Sun) is naturally I suppose completely unlike his other work and so unrepresentative.
