Just quick question - are you in Cyprus at the moment?

Simply for some reason your recent string of posts and avatars have given me that impression. :)

Yep iam... and loving it. Come round for a drink :)

Although this pic is aboriginal art.

Excellent - glad to hear we're accessible from the Med. :)

Postmaster, I'm being increasingly tempted to visit Greece (put another way, I was only able to have my first overseas holiday last year - Egypt (Luxor) - and Turkey is booked for this year (Olu Deniz) - so there's good chance of it being Greece next year).

Point is, I'm very open for recommendations of where we can get a good mixture of culture (ie, Ancient/Byzantine/Mediaeval ruins/buildings) for the grown ups, and sandy beaches for the kids.

It seems that Cyprus potentially has both, in which case, if you were pushed to somewhere for a good mix of both, where would you recommend:

1. In Cyprus itself
2. Anywhere else in Greece

?

Just looking for some good pointers from the natives. :)

Ive been to Rhodes afew times and I even stayed in the old town which is full of medeival runins of the templars. Theres alot of history of this in rhodes and a museum. Same can be said for Cyprus 500 odd templars settled permenetly here.

No joke if you wanted to experience many of the ancient and medieval civilizations in one place, I'd say Cyprus is like no other. Egyptian, Phoenician, Persian, Jewish, Arab, Assyrian, Byzantine, Macedonia, Mycenaean, Minoan, Neolithic, Roman, Venetian franks, ottomans. I really can’t remember all the settlers, visitors, invaders Cyprus has had but the archeology is everywhere and evident in the people of Cyprus.

Hi Brian,

I am a wee bit knowledgeable on the southern mainland part of Greece. Six years in the Peloponesse kind of does that. I'd love to reccomend the area to you and would be more than willing to reccomend the best way to put together a bespoke tour of that region. The Peloponessos peninsula is the biblical part of Greece. Flying into Athens some 50km NE of the Peloponessos you can make the detour to Delphi before heading across the canal to Corinth. Cities and places of interest beyond there include Argos, Sparti, Messinia, Pylos (Nestors Palace), and of course Olympia. I can reccomend tiny villages where you can find cheap pensions and the best authentic restaurants and most importantly of all the most amazing and deserted sandy beaches you could wish for. If you seriously consider going there just ask for more detail.

This is the village I used to party in, but I lived 40km North of there, 7km up a red dirt track amongst the olive groves.

The good thing about many of these ancient or medieval sites anywhere in Greece or Cyprus is there never too far from the sea either usually. Everything is clearly sign posted, English is a second language in Cyprus and both these countries are part of the EU.

Corinth is one place I would dearly love to visit - was looking at the remains of the city on Google Earth last night, and noticed Mycenae looks like it's a close travelling distance. However, searching around, couldn't find much by way of sandy beaches on the north Pelopennese to keep the kids happy?

Rhodes was already on the list, especially Lindos. :)

Thanks for the links on Cypriot castles as well. :)

Your welcome. Not to be bias but an added benefit of Cyprus is, there is a reputable Greek Cypriot short excursion cruises company which goes to Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Egypt, Athens and the Greek Islands. However with the situation in the Middle East they change their schedules all the time. I've been to Isreal, Palestine, Eygpt with them. http://www.louiscruises.com/ these short cruises are popular with Brits.

Ah, would love to be able to explore like that - it's just that with three wee little kids, I figure against travelling too much too hard, otherwise the holiday will seem less relaxing.

Definitely want to go visit some of the great monuments in the Middle East, though:

and Persepolis:

and more besides. :)

So much to do - but so many restraints. :)

So many good places to visit. Dont think I ever will get to see all the places I want and I'm sure thats less likely with kids.. Id love to visit America! Abit hard when you have a fear of flying though.

Ah there is nothin like kids on a cruise ship...

a. you unpack once and put your stuff in the drawers.
b. every morning you wake up at another port
c. they have games, and events for the kids all the time while at sea.

I love them floating cities...

I go through various stages of fear when flying.

generally, its,
usually mild and short lived.
I think i like to be in control and as I do not have a pilots license of any description, i have to let the professionals do their thing.
its more like..."ok, wht if... If I can do this.. I could make it to..." Tht kind of thing.
Then as we ascend, I calm down a bit and think, Oh well, if anything does go wrong thers buggerall I could do. LOL.
Dont let a fear hold you back on anything.
Fears are there to be overcome.
And America is wonderful, and so is Australia.
"If you never never go, you will never never know." (tourism ploy for the Northern Territory)

I hate flying.... I used to have reoccuring nightmares of being in a plane going down and Id wake up before the crash. My Japanese friend told me that in Japanese tradition reoccuring dreams usually happen in real life.

Australia is suppose to be the best country in the world. So I heard.

@ Will theres nothing like cruises.

LOL
Of course it is. Honey, dreams are dreams, just your mind emptying the rubbish from today and every other day. so you can go on without the baggage...
You say, you are afraid of flying and yet you travel to places close to all the middle east conflict!!!!!! Wow, to me, that is scarey.
LOL. Different strokes i guess.
