Tidying my bookshelves

Some of the recent discussions have left me having to look for books on my shelf - where is my Quran, and who was the translator? Which physicist formulated an accelerated period to cause an imbalance in the distribution of matter (Feynman?) - where is my collection of his lecture notes?

Where's my big book on sociobiology? Where's my fun book on particle physics? Where I have left my Tacitus and Herodotus?

When I moved into the current house nearly 3 years ago, the books just got put into the shelves in a general manner, to be tidied up later. Never got around to it.

Now I'm looking for specific books and I can't find them.

The good thing is, this must mean I find the discussions here enjoyable and challenging enough to need my reference notes, which actually feels really good.

Oooh I suggest you organise them quickly. I just organised my parents bookcase... took me like 5 hours!!! Get it done before you end up with mounds and mounds of books to organise LOL

know exactly what you mean; l moved house 2 years ago to a smaller one and just stuck books where l could so even now can't immediately find the one. the dependence on internet sources has somewhat superceded books and l find myself constantly bookmarking good links posted here; the problem is finding time to follow up on them.

crazy reason to want to be retired- to have time to read all those books l ain't got round to reading yet! [unless l get a job as a night watchman].

I'm a demon for tidiness.

Every so often I go through my books and ones that I haven't needed again or are unlikely to be re-read go to a second-hand book shop or charity shop.

Recycle for others!!!

Okay. Tidying book shelves can be a lot more gruelling than it looks.

All those books off the shelves start to take up a lot of floorspace, and because lots of my books are various sizes, putting them together by topic can be seriously hard if the shelves are not high enough.

Anyway, I think I've managed to sort out the history section, but I'll leave the religious lit for a while, I think.

I want to get one of those Kindles and have every book, journal or newspaper digitally stored on a thumbdrive. Yeah that'd be cool. Can we get Amazon to sponsor us on a tryout or something?

If you want to "tidy your bookshelves" Brits may want to avoid The Speaking Tree bookshop in Glastonbury (the website doesn't do it justice). I spent half a day on their big old sofa before settling on an initial half a shelf's worth of books (cheap too!)

I just never could read books on a computer or digital screen for some reason for too long. Even articles are taxing because I like a physical copy of a book in my hands that I can look at. Sometimes I even print off longer articles so I'm not sitting there that long. Mebe that's just me

Also you can make notations in paper books and dog-ear the pages. Its more communal too, because you can pass a book around. (One time somebody lent me a book, and I returned it after reading it.)

I also find it a lot easier to read the printed page rather than the computer screen.

(One time somebody lent me a book, and I returned it after reading it.)
