The WWII question

Israel is a country that used to be fashionable but no longer is fashionable. The political fashionistas have moved on to new fads. That is all it amounts to.

people just decide to support what they think is the weaker side and nobody knows which side is weaker.

What a brilliant post Salty thank you.

I believe the above statement is so true. I used to be an unquestioning supporter of Israel when I felt they were the underdog, the persecuted but as I have read about the history and watched the esculating military action I feel they have become the oppressor so my sympathies have moved to the new underdog (it's a shame people assume this came about because of my religious beliefs).

What I am finding dreadfully sad about it, and in relation to the OP, is that political Israel and the worlds Jews are seen as synonymous. Israel was "advertised" as a place for holocaust survivers and their heirs to find peace and a place of healing. The Jewish holocaust in WWII came about because of an insidious dislike of Jews as a people and I fear that political Israel is marching down the same track, creating bad feeling toward Jews in general .. this worries me, given the history of persecution of Jews through history.

I wonder what caused that

Sorry for making sexist comments, but I think women getting really active in the military is what leads to a military tradition like Israel's.

Some reasons, male hormones running around beside young women, how many men have historically made bad decisions for tens of thousands of years because of this? please laugh.

And another one, young single women (v??g?n?) learning how to get really brutal avoiding the worse in battle situations (we all know women are superior when it comes to survival instinct). Yes, and more brutal than men, don't deny these tendencies as fact.

Now putting this altogether, as a tradition stemming generations, integrating the family factor in every way possible, what do you get?
Viola! You decide.

Women were not "really active in the military" in the British Empire. Women were not "really active in the military" of France during the Algiers revolt in the 20th century.

not sure if you're saying that women being active in the military actually tones down brutality. And if you're comparing the British Empire with Israeli Forces? Don't know much about France.

I'm merely suggesting, not to send sex-crazed teenagers and paranoid virgins and their brothers and sisters into the battlefield fully trained, and supervised and protected by their grand parents, parents, uncles and aunts, on a national scale. The end result could be a military machine that many in the world may frown upon.

e.g. blowing up hostile rock throwing teenagers with tank artillery, would the British do that? I think the Soviets might of.

I am not saying that. You, on the other hand, made the claim that having women on active duty caused brutality. The British and French armies in the situations I cited were infamous for their brutal tactics against "the natives". They didn't have the trait you claimed caused brutality.

The British in India used the tactic of tying Indians to the muzzles of cannons to execute them. In 12 June 1857, this was done to 38 Sepoy rebel prisoners of war. They did this ten men at a time, gathering up the body parts between and after each firing. Two other men, who did not exercise sufficient "firmness", were, instead, thrown to the ground and shot in the head with muskets. This was done in a middle of a public square in Peshawar, with an audience of Indians, of course. A smaller-scale execution by cannon (10 men) occurred the next day in Ferezepore. The entire town was "convened" to witness. A British officer named Renaud had his men hang twelve people because their faces were "turned the wrong way" when the army marched past. This is far from a complete tale of all the atrocities committed by the British army during the time of Empire.

Before you try to explain history, learn history.

women in the israeli army don't serve in combat units. in fact, there is a general feeling amongst my friends and family that most of them seem to spend their military service doing administrative and clerical work. no, i think it's a bit less specific than that. if you've ever spent any time in israel, you'll have encountered the famously spiky and confrontational interpersonal dynamic, which isn't restricted to either gender, which gave the natives the nickname "sabra" - from a particularly prickly, but sweet inside sort of cactus.

Women in the US Coast Guard do serve in combat units. In fact they are Commanding Officers of combatant ships, TACLET and LEDET team members, special agents, Rescue swimmers, Gunners Mates, etc...

They are on cutters that help protect carriers in the Persian Gulf. These are not supply vessels. They have 76 MM cannons and deck guns, torpedoes and are designed to fire missles. They have boarding teams, sharpshooters, Damage Control techs, Fire Control Techs, Machinery Techs...

They run river patrols up and down the rivers in the Middle East.

We do not remove women from combat units, because they get the job done, and are as professional as any other "Coast Guardsmen".

True, women make up less than 20% of the crews, but they are not banned from any position in the service, for any reason, and they are all over the place.
