An interesting account which reveals a startling truth (well...not that startling actually) that joseph smith was a lying sack of crap:

It is truly amazing what people will believe.
Thousands of people (correction (I just googled it) there are 12 millions) who believe in some fiction concocted by an individual who if alive today would have been a fantasy author.
Better not bet your life on it.

Since the translation of this one book which scholars can study has proved to be a fraud, how can people trust that the other book written by smith (which has never been available cuz he had to give it to the angel.....how convenient;)) is not merely more of the same wild fantasy cooked up in the fertile imagination of said mr. smith.
Certainly should make people think a bit more about what they choose to believe.

Should you base your life decisions upon heresay(heresy by any other term until verified) or verifiable facts?

People were certainly more susceptible to such scams back in the day.....you know, ignorant in general of so many things, gullible/trusting and naive in regard to certain matters. Ripe for the picking for convincing and charismatic con-men.
Not much different from these days.....isn't it.

Faith is the foundation of all religious belief.

Which books were actually written by God/Great Spirit/The Universe, as opposed to the hand of man?

Likely none.
But that is a diversionary comment, as the OP is focusing on one in particular, not the whole lot.

Am I the only one here who has read the works of David Hume?

Just wondering...

I would of rather you hadn't have used words like, "joseph smith was a lying sack of crap", although I found the video illuminating and very interesting.
I've just joined this forum after a friend i hold in the highest regard today told me about it.
I'm looking forward to more learning and debate, with a view towards all of us coming together into one single solution in the name of Goodness/God/Allah/Jahweh/Icky the firebobby or call "it" whatever you like - He doesn't mind.

That same 12 million people are just as vulnerable as we are or were once and unfortunately they are still in the problem and unaware of it.

WE need everyone single person to be included in the solution, otherwise it won't work. Every single person.

Thank you very much for sharing what you found, i feel my day hasn't been wasted. If we can continue sharing like this i'll be very happy.

All the best :)

Glad you could make it Tone.
I suppose that "lying sack of crap" is a bit strong, but given the damage done by said con-artist, I think that is perhaps a nice term.

Tone:

Every one is valuable.....life is the greatest treasure.

I've done similar things to Joe Smith haven't you?
Have you never been carried away with an idea and only by looking back on it realised how foolish you've been using hindsight? I have.
If we don't forgive Joe for what he did, how are the 12 million people who are still "trapped" gonna be able to move on and help us with the solution?

A comic did a routine about that, I'll try to paraphrase:

"Emma, have you seen my hat with the seer stones? I thought it was down in the basement by the furnace."

"Oh, that old thing? You never wear it anymore, so I put it out in the yard sale."

"What about the seer stones? I need them to translate this Egyptian papyrus I just, uh, found."

"Those crystally things? They fetched a couple bucks. That chest with the golden plates got a lot more."

"You SOLD my golden plates?!? But the angel of God gave those to me!"

"Well, what were we going to do with them? They were just sitting there gathering dust."

"But I told all my, uh, disciples that I have golden plates from the angel of God! What am I going to tell them now?"

"Just say the angel took them back. I mean, what's the problem?"

"I am SO going to get another wife!"

I don't hold anything against old Joe.:D
But I do call them as I see them.
I believe in not saccharine coating things.
And yes.....I am a former christian, on the road to recovery from my belief addiction.
