Namaste all,

so.. i'm wanting to discuss some artistic endeavors excluding music and modern media as we have sections for them... but more as Art theory, painting, sculpture and so forth.

i don't know if we need a new section on it as i'm not sure if there's anyone other than me that would be keen for it.

thoughts?

metta,

Once we have a few topics on the subject, I'm sure it'll prove a need. :)

Do you have a topic in mind?

Off the top of my head:
  1. Plato's hostility towards the idea of "art for art's sake"
  2. Aristotle's support for the idea of "art for art's sake"
  3. Sculpture vs Painting (or Michelangelo vs Da Vinci)
  4. Goethe and Schiller's Aesthetics (or German Romanticism)
  5. Philosophical Art - A Contradiction?
  6. The Power of Art To Guide or Mislead the Masses
  7. Modern "Art" (Are These Quotemarks Ironic? Discuss)

I'll stop at 7 ...

cuz I like don't like 8...

it looks like its lookin at me ... sideways

look at it !!

DAMN IT EIGHT !!! STOP LOOKING AT ME !!!!

Seriously, didn't I see you in Blue Velvet?

You are such an educated young man, where did you go to school?

Namaste Paladin,

thank you for the post.

(thanks to everyone for contributing so far!!)

hmm... well... i would be interested in discussing the impact of Western Linear Perspective upon Asian, specifically Japanese art and the impact of Japanese art upon Western art and artists initially.

i would be interested in talking about the use of light and planes by various artists of the Western traditions, technique in some cases and ascetic choices in others.

i certainly like code's suggestions as well! those should prove to be rather fruitful topics in and of themselves each one needing a thread of it's own!

metta,

I would love to see a few examples of that-the impact of different cultures-and as to the second wish, may I vote for Andrew Wyeth and JMW Turner?

I know what you mean. I'm self-educated too for the most part.

"A rich man goes to college, a poor man goes to work" -Charlie Daniels

Still I'm often impressed with your knowledge, even when I don't agree.

I think I would like to explore the impact on the performing arts by the contributions of Freud, Adler and Jung. If such a thing were possible.

Feedback loop! The collective unconscious according to Jung influencing the collective unconscious? Eek! Static and feedback! Eek! Modern art! Eek! Static and feedback! ;)

Hmm? light and planes, eh? As I push paint around a canvas, might be an interesting discussion topic. Though after a decade of pushing paint around, unsure how much I'd be able to offer.:) earl

Well, I'd like to hear what happened when you started pushing paint around. What did that feel like?

My hobby is landscape painting-acrylics. 10 years of doing it and on rare occasion end up with a finished painting I wouldn't toss. So what does it feel like? Moments of frustration, punctuated by moments of rapt flow and contentment.:p earl
