I guess the real question is: Who are you loyal to?
If it is the humans which are causing disunity and segregating us, then it is easy to maintain support for them. If the loyalty is to God, and not the impermanent form that has represented him on the earth, then it becomes easy to realize he must will unity among people without first necessitating violence. The secret of One God is the Oneness, non-duality, yet we continuously find ways to segregate.
It is not really unity when refusing can lead to death. It is not really unity when you are segregated into 33,000 sects. It is never unity when our motivations are selfish. It is unity when we accept our diversities and yet come together to benefit all anyway!
