A Hasidic Sex-Segregated Bus in Brooklyn

This is in the Hasidic-discrimination-against-women thread because it's a story about discrimination against women.
in which case, put it in "politics and society", not here; as unpleasant and stupid as this behaviour is, one has very little to do with the other. better yet, go post it somewhere where hindus can read it and react, i'm sure bhaktajan would be delighted to tell you how it's all the fault of people eating meat.

Well it dose put things in perspective at least.
you mean stupid modesty regulations aren't exactly the same as the problem with the attitude to baby girls in certain cultures? yes, i'd say so. you might also consider the problem they already have in china where, expensive dowry issue or not, they're starting to run out of girls because boys are preferred under the "one child policy" and consequently many of the chinese men who can't find anyone to marry are starting to act very peculiarly indeed. i'd find some way to get these indian girls to emigrate to china!

I read stuff like this and think -- was Adolf so wrong?
to kill six million men, women and children because some hasidim have a stupid attitude to modesty? yeah, that's reasonable. don't be such a feckin' feathered eejit. or perhaps you'd like to come down to london and say that to my wife, whose father's family were all murdered apart from him, including her 8-year old aunt. why don't you think before you hit "post"?

we've had two anti-semitic comments on the judaism board in the last week. any more and i'm going to start to get busy with my mod hat. you have been warned.

Yes...well, can't we agree that it can turn into a form of discrimination when it is turned against bystanders who just want to take the bus?
I still think it's so far from naming girls unwanted that they shouldn't be in the same thread.
And modesty in cultures can take many different forms and I don't think it's an evil in itself, but can be quit beautiful in a way (even though I'm not sure I practice any form of modesty myself, might be a matter of definition).

certainly! i think these people are mad when it comes to so-called modesty. judaism is not about isolating yourself from everyone else.

precisely.

there's certainly a time and a place for it, but there's a difference between modesty, taste and plain old neurosis.

Let's examine the reason why such a rule was put into practice.
I've read the reason is to avoid physical contact between members of opposite sexes which is prohibited by Hasidic tradition, men sit in the front of the bus and women sit in the back.

Is this true?
What about every time I see Jews going to Temple, the women walk far behind the men? What's that all about?

ok - part of the answer is the same thing that led to the famous joke:

Jokes

it's like this:

1. "no adultery" - Torah source
2. "make a fence around the Torah" - Mishnah source
3. "avoid the practices of idolators" - Gemara source, referring to:
4. "sexual immorality was foremost amongst the idolatrous behaviours of the seven nations of canaan" - Torah source
5. so, see #1 again, then:
6. "avoid anything which smacks of sexual immorality"
7. "avoid anything which hints at possibly allowing the possibility of smacking of sexual immorality"
8. add a healthy dose of conservatism and fear and
- hey presto, women and men are pretty much banned from interacting unless they are closely related. and amongst the ultra-orthodox, this has now reached such a degree that it is not that surprising to see a group of imbeciles from beit shemesh actually trying to introduce a "kosher burqa" which, fortunately, has been vetoed on the grounds of it being neurotic (but nothing to do with overdoing it on 7 and 8, oh, no).

as for why women at the back, it's actually quite simple - men are more likely to check out women from behind than vice-versa.

What about every time I see Jews going to Temple, the women walk far behind the men? What's that all about?
unless it's a version of the same thing amongst the ultra-orthodox (some of them are attempting to introduce "men-only" and "women-only" streets in jerusalem, sheesh) it could just be that the men are in more of a hurry thatn the women, as they are obliged in communal prayer whereas the women aren't - and generally have children in tow, which slows them down. hard to say if it's actually an overt thing, i've never seen it in london but that's not to say there isn't some hasidic norm, it certainly isn't the norm amongst the mod-orthodox or the sefardim.
