Hello list,

I've been lurking around a few days and decided to introduce myself, along with a brief description of where I'm at on the spiritual journey.

I'm a middle-aged male from the southern U.S. I guess I would describe myself as a wandering Christian. I no longer belong to any established denominations and it has been this way for many years.

I found this list while doing a search on the dark night of the soul. This led me to a thread here which is several years old now. I didn't bother posting to it due to the amount of time it has been dormant.

The search pretty much tells you where I am right now in my spiritual walk: in increasing darkness. That pretty much sums it up. Lost in a night that is distressing, yet in some ways strangely beautiful.

I never really know what I'm looking for when I join a list. Perhaps the next step in the night, or perhaps a little human contact, who knows.

I've never been a prolific poster, more of reader really; but I will try to post a little from time to time.

Welcome, I do hope you enjoy yourself. Christianity has an honourable tradition of 'dark nights of the soul'. Been through a few myself, but I always find they are creative and nourishing in the longer term.

Hello Stranger,

It helps to have contact with other people, especially when moving into another stage in one's life. Middle age is an interesting time, and it may mean re-evaluating quite a few things. As ungrounded as it may feel I find it a very intriguing stage of life. Feel free to explore, there are people here who love to engage on many levels. May you find something of value here.

Greetings stranger, namaste, welcome and have no fear,
we've had stranger greetings here.

Explore and post your questions as you see fit,

I've no idear why I am rhyming this.
Creating the equivalent of an IO briss.

Now I can't stop but can at least promise you
that this is not a poetry site.

(my weird mind likes the absurdity of the lousy poem and it's cliff ending)

But beyond that stranger, yes we've all spent our time in the desert, and the garden (take this cup from me)....tis the journey eh?

Thanks for the welcome elumin8. I look forward to hearing more about those dark nights. I don't look to be coming out of this one anytime soon, so I'm sure the subject will come up again somewhere on down the road. :)

I appreciate that, fellow middle-ager. :) Intriguing indeed it is, in a dire strait sort of way. Nothing sure, nothing solid, and not much identity to hold on to. More a matter of survival than anything else, or so it feels to me. But that is where the discovery begins, I think.

Namaste Will, thanks for the welcome. I liked the poem, cliff ending and all. :)
A couple of weeks ago I had a dream which I wrote down in poem form (which I never do, being not a poet by any stretch of the imagination. It's silly and cheesy, but I thought you might enjoy it here -- or not, but freely given at any rate. I haven't shared it with anyone until now. Pardon the cheesy ending, I just threw that on there as a possible interpretation. Perhaps it speaks somewhat of the journey, but I'm not sure.

A Dream Of Flightless Birds

Penguins and owls all up in the sky,
And air shows made up of cars that can fly.

I tried to tell others of the penguins that day,
But instead, "pigeons" is all I could say.

To speak of the cars would not be so wise,
Most likely they were but airplanes disguised.

Here in these lands an old love I met,
But to tell her my love I still could not yet.

Try as I might, try as I would,
The words would not come as I thought they should.

The shadowlands linger, so endless they seem,
While silence and darkness take all but the dream.

But should a day dawn when mute souls can sing,
They'd tell you about flightless birds on the wing.

Howdy, Stranger.

Are there any rocks ahead? If there are we'll soon be dead. No more rhymes now, I mean it!
-- quote from a famous movie that most people either love or hate

I've been accurately identified.....silly and cheesy....that is my taste...

I like the poem....are you into lucid dreaming?? Sounds like a fun one....and if there was any semblance of reality attached and you aren't in a committed relationship.....tell her/im

"Anybody want a peanut?"
A gentle giant once spoke the last line
Of which we now speak at this time.
And so I relate now with much pride
This catchy quote from The Princess Bride.

(Thanks Dream) :)

Not lucid dreaming per se, but I do pay attention to dreams, especially the ''big" ones which leave strong residual feelings or a sense that something important has been communicated. I don't seem to have any control over the dream or any awareness that I am dreaming. The girl in the dream is/was a real person from long ago who is an occasional visitor to my dreams, always haunting and just out of reach somehow. As dreams go, I'd have to say this was a good one. Are you able to do the lucid dreaming?

I most often don't remember my dreams....the ones I remember most are the ones I control. When I realize I am dreaming, it allows me to take control, which is interesting, but also slightly disconcerting in the aspect of what would have occurred had I not taken control.

When I first started it was either getting rid of a bad dream, converting it, or laying back down to continue a dream...I really can't recall which, but those are my earliest memories of doing it. Again, it was a problem becuase I am in this wild dream (not nightmare) and awake...conscoiusly want to see where it goes and will myself asleep and back into it...but now that i am back in it, I am aware it is a dream and start playing around... I think I prefer the picture show.
