What Kind of Car Do You Drive?

One of our Daimlers broke down when visiting a petrol-head friend – he had a Gordon-Keeble among others, and he lent us an old Spitfire he'd picked up somewhere to get us home while he sorted the repairs to our car. He told me if it broke, just throw it away ... what fun it was! I can't imagine what one would be like with a V8.

The Spitfire we've been talking about was my first car. Bought it secondhand back in 1978. The whole conversion came about only because my dad was planning to put a Toyota diesel in the Range Rover. Nothing wrong with the petrol motor, but diesel is a lot more economical on the farm. My car had a blown motor, never give a college kid keys to a sports, and the Rover's motor looked like it might fit. I'm not really a gear head though. NJ's actually the car guy here. See Post #34.

Finally got up off my wallet and bought a new car last year, a 2015 Mazda 2. My last new car was a 1986 Ford Escort EXP. That turned out to be such a horrible experience for me that I've only owned secondhand vehicles ever since. Times change however, and I am no longer able to maintain the old bangers.

We've had the Mazda 2 for a year now and what a great car it has been. Simple, cheap and easy to maintain. Best of all, the wife likes it too. She may even let me drive it some day....lol! :D

Got this text from Aussie this morning:

Wife wants me to get a new truck. ...and after I went and taught it to roll over and everything!

Nobody hurt including that damned roo! The universe is gunning for me mate.

Aussie's "guardian angel" is (right now) drinking the Australian equivalent of moonshine. Or smoking some strange kind of plant/fungus native to that region.

Says he drove it home and plans to have it fixed. According to him, just needs a new windscreen and side mirror! One of a kind, that boy.

Sold our Miata the other day, having owned it for just over 14 years. Got to the point where repair costs exceeded value, so away it went. Only now, even though it's just the two of us, having a mere two cars seems odd. I fear it's just a matter of time before the fleet grows in number again. Zoom, Zoom...

I parked my car a couple years ago... bus, train or thumb has been my mode for a while... It is a different world... While it is almost unamerican to not own a car...most of the world population do not. It is interesting to live without one. I find it just as interesting to not have a washing machine and use a laundromat... When you own a car, and have a washing machine in your home there is a significant portion of American society that you completely lose touch with.

Yeah, been a while there were less than 3 cars parked at your place. Just the one registered in my own name still, but between the farm and other family members, there's always a dozen or more vehicles at my disposal at any given time.

The most I ever had at one time tagged and running was five, but I have a lot bigger driveway now!:D Ah, but the trouble is, I'm not physically able to keep up with a large fleet anymore. Pity really. My love of cars has allowed me to cross paths with a lot of very interesting people I would not have otherwise met. Many of whom have become lifelong friends. Soooo, maybe just one more...

Haven't really had ANY transport for the last few months.
Buses & trains have been dis-allowed for pensioners due to covid.
I haven't owned a car for over 10 years now .. can't afford it.

I wonder if electric cars will "take off".
I doubt whether there will be many cars on the road compared to now, as time goes on.
