I am of the opinion that doubt where one's stance on faith is concerned is much healthier than claiming to have the 'truth' as some do. Without any evidence to substantiate whether or not a deity exists, none of us can be absolutely sure our position is correct, however much we wish it to be. I fervently hope the Biblical deity is a human myth as it is so unpleasant. However, I have to admit I don't know for sure. If it does exist I had better invest in asbestos clothing as I am for the burning!:D

I have taken a look at several different religions over the decades, but I always make it a point to head for the door as soon as I hear something unacceptable. I have headed for the door several times in the last several decades. Fortunately, I have found a belief system (Theosophy) that I (so far) agree with 100%. Believe me, it sure makes life easier.

I recommend to everyone not to 'settle for' a religion that doesn't make sense, but to look around, and keep looking around until you find something you can be comfortable with 100% of the time. In my book, 99% of the time just doesn't cut it.

I am quite sure that the deity as described in the Bible does not exist. You have nothing to worry about.

But do you believe in hell? Do you believe we will held responsible for the bad things we do?

I am of the opinion that when we die we cease to be, I hope that is true.
 
So you think bad people will not be held accountable for the bad things they do, bad people will just cease to be (along with everyone else)?

I would suspect the Diety as described and/or presented in the Bible is something of a myth, or not as mythterious as it may seem to be. Don't do the asbestos thing unless you just like asbestos. I used to have my Levi's heavy starched and they would wear almost like asbestos incrusted tailoring.

There isn't going to be a place with flames, or even excessive heat. Unless your body is cremated and in that case you won't be there to care. Any notion of hell is going to be a creation of your own mind and then will be something more like an algebra class and you have to solve the equations before you can go out to play. But then play is going to be more like life on earth so the hell thing is more your own option. Pay now or pay later.

I like you QB. I like you because you're consistent. Let me see if I've got this straight. Bible bad. Me no like. Does that about size it up?

Don't call the Royal Guard, just yanking your chain. All jokes aside though, I actually have similar misgivings in regard to the Bible. I have a different way of looking at it though. In the movie, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" the animated fem-fatal Jessica Rabbit said, "I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way" and that's how I view the deity of scripture. He's not bad. He's just portrayed that way.

If, as I hope and believe, the Biblical deity is a human creation then my asbestos clothing will be unnecessary.:D It probably is anyway as my insides are no doubt coated with the stuff! In the 50s/60s my Father used asbestos in his horticultural business, before the dangers were widely known. It was sawn up and my sisters and I liked the feel of the dust which was silky and smooth. I even liked the taste of it. It tasted like cheap muesli! I wonder if eventually I will succumb to asbestosis?:eek:

There are some good bits in the Bible as the authors attributed some of their characters with a few wise comments.

If the Biblical deity exists but isn't as portrayed by the authors, then how can we any idea what it is like? The Christian faith is based on the Biblical portrayal of the deity.
 
Hey, Q, I have a question for you. I was just going through my entire music collection, and I found several songs that are very inspiring to me.

I'm curious: are there any songs that you find very inspiring? Songs that, when you listen to them, make you think about how great humanity could be if we all lived up to our potential?

I know I am weird, but I don't like music it stresses me out!
 
Then it's time to start looking into your sub-conscious, find out why you are 'weird.' and why music stresses you out.

The Christian faith is based on a personal relationship with God, the Bible tells stories of other peoples experiences with God.
 
Well Jesus/the deity obviously didn't want a personal relationship with me when I was a kid and wanted one, so I gave upon them.

I've always thought that the Christian faith as intended by Jesus was laid asunder by organized religion's portrayal of politics guised as goodness and mercy < in an historic concept, of course.

That's a popular misconception, but Christianity is not based of Biblical Portrayal. Very little in the Bible is meant to be taken literally. Christianity as Nice Cup points out, is about your personal relationship with God. It's about your interpretation of the accounts presented in the scripture. God speaks to each and everyone of us each and everyday and is heard loud and clear for those who take the time to listen.
