Carl Rogers used to say that when we come across evidence, even experiential bite-your-butt-and-leave-teeth-marks evidence, that is contrary to our deeply held beliefs, our brains distort and deny - just don't see - that evidence. This is to protect us from shock, rather than put us to the considerable and life-changing effort and work involved in accepting a new paradigm.
For me that is exemplified by the "explaining" of supernatural experiences in terms of "natural earthbound explanations."
TBH I find it difficult to be satisfied with "natural earthbound explanations" for even natural earthbound phenomena, so we are starting from different places. So, I'm not holding my breath. But, hey, for the lurkers .....
