I hope that the religious leaders of the world will come up with some firm resolutions, and action plans as a result. It is one thing to talk the talk, and yet another to carry out an action plan as an outcome. So many conferences result in little action in the end. But we have to start somewhere for sure.
One of the ongoing problems is that certain groups who really need to be attending boycott these affairs, out of a belief system of exclusivity. As a consequence we have action plans like this one .. http://www.parliamentofreligions.org/index.cfm?n=34&sn=2 out of the last conference.

Religious hostility has been going on for several thousand years. The first Parliament was around 1893, so it will take time to harmonize most of them.

Thanks for sharing that notice about the Parliament of World Religions... I think the last one was in Barcelons and prior to that in Sydney Australia. You are correct the first World Parliament of Religions was in 1893....in Chicago.

Do you know if it was part of the World's Fair/Columbian Exposition held in Chicago that year?

Nevermind. I found a lot of information about the 1893 meeting. I had no idea the Parliament had been around so long.
Hinduism's famous groundbreaking swami, Vivekenanda, delivered his historic speech there, in 1893. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swami_Vivekananda_at_the_Parliament_of_the_World's_Religions_(1893) That was the beginning of eastern thought coming to America.

Very true, Arthra. I had forgotten. As well, there were others who were influenced besides Emerson, like theosophy. The reason that Vivekenanda gets special attention is simply a matter of degree of impact, I think. And of course this thread was about Parliament of Religions, which was a reminder of Vivekenanda.
Thoreau and Emerson....transcendentalists...opened the path for Quimby and New Thought and Mary Baker Eddy, the Fillmores, and Ernest Holmes....

There is also Hazrat Inayat Kahn....a sufi who brought the dances of universal peace to the US... the dances and chants are from all religions, they are meditative, repetitive dance movements and chants...an incredible experience honoring all beliefs within an Islamic mysticism (Sufi) umbrella...
