Split between Mahayana and Theravada

I have been told that I act/think more Buddhist than Christian and everytime I take the beliefnet test I end up showing somewhat Buddhist...just retook and showed 83% M 67% T...can you explain the differences? Is there a chart you recommend or Venn Diagram?

I don't know mch but M may stand for Mahayana Buddhism and T may stand for Theravada Buddhism, so your test and your belief may resonate that of Mahayana Buddhism.

It was inevitable that a split occured, and all not unusual considering how ultimately over the course of time, the way and manner pertaining to conduct and ritual will change accordingly so that it conforms well enough among adherents of whom dispositions vary.

Its mainly schematics that are affected such as preservation of traditional vs. progressive approaches among the sangha, as well as ritual and scriptural inferences that come into play, but not the core teachings by which Buddhist schools maintain regardless of changes that occur within each recognized tradition.

Is it true that Mahayana was the majority before the split but some of the documents/sources they used are from dubious origins? And theravada remove books of unknown authenticity and the majority of them are actually the elder monks of the sangha?

Where did you hear or read Mahayana was the majority before the split? My understanding is Mahayana originated from the Mahasamghika. According to Wikipedia, the Second Buddhist council resulted in the first split. It says:

"The Second Council resulted in the first schism in the Sangha, probably caused by a group of reformists called Sthaviras who split from the conservative majority Mahāsāṃghikas."

Perhaps those more knowledgeable in Buddhist history would like to chime in? I'm familiar with the differences between Mahayana and Theravada, but I'm not familiar with their histories.

It's a bit like pasty ooze. Kind of squirts all over the place. People argue over the same things because it left it's former container.
