So Shia is true instead of Sunni according to Baha'i?

Vivandall,

Thanks for posting here!

Baha'is are not opposed to Sunni Islam and we acknowledge Sunnis are good Muslims and faithful people... but we accept the Shiah view of the early history of Islam and deplore the persecution of the descendants of the Prophet especially during the lifetime of Muawiyih, Yazid and the Umayyads. Recall that Muawiyyih was the son of Abu Sufyan who was an enemy of the Muslims until late in his lifetime...

Hi there,
What is the Baha'i view on hadiths which seem to describe Dajjal , Jesus Christ, Day of Resurrection etc. in a literal way?

Hi there,

Thanks for your question Vivandall...

My impression is that Hadiths sources are variable.. and there are some references to Hadiths in our Writings. Generally though we prefer symbolic and spiritual interpretations to literal ones.

"One of the veils is literal interpretation. To penetrate the inner significances a mighty effort is needed. When one in reading substitutes the symbolic or spiritual title of the great ones, the human temple fades and only reality remains.

(Abdu'l-Baha, Divine Philosophy, p. 29)

an example of a reference to a Hadith in the Baha'i Writings follows:

"Thus is is related in the 'Biharu'l-Anvar,' the 'Avalim,' and the 'Yanbu' of Sadiq [the Sixth Imam (Ja'far-i-Sadiq)], son of Muhammad, that he spoke these words: 'Knowledge is twenty and seven letters. All that the Prophets have revealed are two letters thereof. No man thus far hath known more than these two letters. But when the Qa'im shall arise, He will cause the remaining twenty and five letters to be made manifest.' Consider; He hath declared Knowledge to consist of twenty and seven letters, and regarded all the Prophets, from Adam even unto the 'Seal,' as expounders of only two letters thereof and of having been sent down with these two letters. He also saith that the Qa'im will reveal all the remaining twenty and five letters. Behold from this utterance how great and lofty is His station! His rank excelleth that of all the Prophets, and His Revelation transcendeth the comprehension and understanding of all their chosen ones."

As far as Baha'i Writings themselves are concerned we prefer them to be authenticated. The Baha'i Writings were originally in Arabic and Farsi and only a portion have been translated into English. The standards of translation are very high.

We have what are called "Pilgrim notes" and these are reported sayings of the Central Figures of our Faith, but they do not have the authority of the actual Writings. There is a book called The Dawn-Breakers which was translated by Shoghi Effendi and it contains many references to Hadiths.. It is a history of our Faith in Persia and the Hadiths many of which refer to the end times and prophecies...
