Questions for class...

Hi,
I am currently taking a class on world religions. My professor wanted me to talk to someone regarding their beliefs. Is there anyone who would be willing to talk to me about Islam? I'd appreciate it. Thanks

So I've been reading that there are various branches of Islam. Which group do you most closely associate with? And what would you say the most important belief or tennent of your faith is? And how does it affect your life? Can you tell me a little bit about Islam in your own words? (anything that you think is important for me to know?)

i adhere to the sunni branch of Islam

the most important belief/tenant is that which makes one a muslim; the belief and declaration that there is only 1 God, Allah, and Muhammad [pbuh] being ALlah's messenger; this belief remains with every muslim in their heart and it is renewed by worship, the most important of all being the daily prayers so in a sense the prayers is the most important tenant after belief

it effects my life in every way imaginable; basically i've reach a spiritual height in my life where i experience and view things spiritually, so when i sin, it eventually takes it toll and i feel i have to cleanse myself with prayer, so basically the prayer is the thing which i feel keeps me human

So prayer is really important. As you said, it helps make you human. Can you clarify, you mentioned sin. If you don't mind...What are some of the things which you might do, or that you see, as wrong?

Is there anything else can you tell me about Sunni Islam? Are there any other aspects really key to Islam? Is there anything you would want me to understand?

i dont think it will be benifical to hear the 'my sins' side of the story now; as i say i weren't 'upto it last night and said some wrong things! :D:D:D

however that is insight into a deeper spiritual state; the 'inner-workings' of Islam you could say, but best to keep to the basics in a school lesson!

I just wanted to make sure...I can see that there are some places where people have somewhat different views on some things. Does this website communicate your beliefs exactly? Is there anything else that you feel needs addressed? I am assuming it is or you wouldn't have given it to me, but I want to get my facts straight.

It is for a class, yes. I am a christian. However the point of the assignment was not to get into a debate about religion but to learn first hand what another person said about their religion. We can read textbooks but they are only going to tell us so much (often from their point of view). You can learn more from first hand accounts.
 
Oh I hear ya... Not debating just a question.

You had asked if he agreed with everything on the website.. It is very few that agree with every tenent every facet of their faith...hence thousands of denominations of Christianity, dozens of sects of Islam and a few varieties of Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism..
 
I realize that not everyone agrees with everyone in their group. But I also assumed that this one was fairly close or he wouldn't have used that particular website to answer my questions. As part of my assignment I am supposed to talk to someone about their beliefs, not just know what their religion (in this case Islam) believes in general. I was trying to give him the opportunity to explain if there was something he viewed as different than the website put it. (I might have been able to word it better, but at the time thats how I thought to word it)
 
No worries, I am sure he'll respond, my son had a similar assignment, he went to a local mosque and a Hindu temple... In both cases he found someone near his age willing to walk him around.

i'll leave it to wil, he's doing a much better job than me!

oops wil aint saying much i see, so ... er yeah i agree that site is cool!; sunni's basically agree with all the basics; it's only the more complicated stuff where we begin to disagree, such as is isis correctly guided or not! :D, but i'm pleased to say most of us agree their not! :)
 
Hey. Sorry I wasn't meaning to put you on the spot. As I said my professor wanted us to talk to someone and see what they believed, rather than the general belief of a religion. I know many people in any religion disagree (to some extent) on things. So I was just trying to not assume your beliefs.
