a figment of your imagination
Do either fit into your belief system and how?

Whether you are Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, other, or none....wondering how you use, and how you incorporate either.

Me I've run into many a Christian who believe/use both. I myself have not looked into either to know much and count myself generally skeptical.

Numerology fits into my belief system. Not all Muslims are comfortable with numeric analogy, but it's been a part of Islam since it's earliest days. It is more accepted among the Sufis (Muslim Mystics) and condemned among hard-line Fudamentalist.

Each letter of the Arabic alphabet has a numeric value, so the numeric value of a word is considered significant. Words having the same numeric value are thought (by many) to have an underlying connection even if their meaning is vastly different.

Also, there is a method called "Abjad", where another word is derived from a word using numeric values, revealing (supposedly) a "hidden" meaning. I think it has some validity.

There is also something known as the "Code of Nineteen" based upon The Quranic verses 74:30 & 31, which is very interesting.

Often times Muslims will put the number 786 at the top of a letter. 786 is the numeric value of the phrase -
"Bismillah ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem", meaning -
"In the name of Allah The Compassionate The Merciful", which is at the beginning of every Surah (Chapter) of The Quran (except Surah 9, which has to do with the code of 19).

These are usually considered to be controversial subjects in the Muslim Communities and are mostly studied discreetly, but they are well known to the 'Ulama (Scholars) who differ in opinion about their validity, permissibility and benefit.

I've not encountered much astrology in Islam and I rarely even consider it.

Thank you for your response...so are you Sufi, or consider yourself a more liberal Muslim then?

I am familiar with
"Bismillah ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem"
as it is chanted in our opening and closing dances...(Dances for Universal Peace) a Sufi offshoot here in the states. I'd be interested in knowing what you know about it as well.

Anything more you can say about your use/interpretation of numerology would be of interest.

Did a lot in my 'esoteric' days ... there's a marginal interest from a Christian perspective, an awareness of geomancy, that kind of thing.

I am Sufi - ish

In my first few years as a Muslim I identified myself as a Sufi because I approached Islam from a very Spiritual - even Mystical - perspective, but eventually I felt I needed to balance my Islamic Esotericism with my Exotericism, so (after much study) I committed to the Shi'a (Jafari) School of Thought.

Within the Shi'a there is something called 'Irfani, often described as "Islamic Gnosticism", which is comparable to Sufism - also embraces numerology.

I often take notice of numeric patterns in my life and when doing Quranic word studies I always take the numeric value into account, for what ever meaning may be revealed & connection to other words.

"muslim woman" was an active poster here years ago... converted from Christianity to Islam after reading the Quran (to prove to others how anti woman the Quran was!!) She was awesome at providing detailed information regarding her belief.

Miss her input here.

Wow, wil, you just skipped over Joe as if nothing. But, yeah, I also miss her, she was badass.

Called out....wow....tossed right under that bus.

I guess I did. My brain went to the one I miss the most... The current tenor of Arif (my impression) matches more the responses and writings of MW than Joe.

Why or how I cannot define as I do not understand the workings of my mind and the memories it chooses to bring up in the moment. And you guys think you have problems with my writing, you should see my arguments with what my fingers produce.

I could agree with that, given the few posts we have seen from you Arif. Joe seemed, to me, to feel that he needed to defend Islam and Muslims at every point. Where MW would write about aspects of the religion she loved without feeling she should put it in any specific light.
I wonder if they would agree with that, and they aren't here to correct me.

ACOT, I'm still lurking from time to time. Unfortunately work has be busy.

I usually respond to accusations. I've a few posts here and there that are general interest in explaining my beliefs. maybe I'll get a chance to read through a bit more. see if I can be a bit more scholarly in a few posts...

Hi Joe!
Did you feel what I wrote was mostly wrong or mostly sort of right?
So in other words -

I'm SUPER DUPER HARD CORE AWESOME!
Yes, duh.

I think every "mainstream" Muslim has had tracks of defense. I think I came in at a time when it was all but a necessity. I think MW came a bit before when things were a bit calmer.

as for my thoughts on this topic: I'm not well versed in the study of either. I know that in both Christianity and Islam people have spent lifetimes trying to apply numerology in various forms. The study of numerology is largely viewed as unreliable, and many see it as a form of heresy. Astrology is widely viewed as heresy.

Sufism being what it is, I can understand it's better acceptance of Numerology. I think in a way it makes sense that patterns would ultimately be able to be found, but I am a little hard pressed to understand what they might could teach more than the words themselves. as for personal life studies, I think identifiable structure is more a sign from Allah of a designed existence than that of a secret code. if one were to break a video game down into it's most basic form mathematical formulas and repeated structure would be a obvious sign that it was designed rather than spontaneous. but that code would likely not tell you the level of fun or success that game would have. much like in nature where we see mathematical models able to guide nearly everything (although it is generally accepted that what we can't find the math for is only due to lack of ability to figure it out).
