spiritual music

I am afraid I am rather boring and tend to listen to Hisham Abbas singing the 99 names of Allah or Sami Yusuf singing about our faith, it just makes me feel happy and peaceful.

YouTube - Hisham Abbas - 99 Names Of Allah

YouTube - Sami Yusuf - Supplication=

These are my 2 favourites when I want to feel closer to Allah (swt), they are in Arabic (the 2nd one has some english) but worth a listen if you have 5 minutes spare. The second one gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it :D

In retrospect, a turningpoint in my "religious development" was when I was visiting with my friend Reza. I think I was 13 years old at the time. His father had on old tape recorder on the living room table and was listening to recordings of the Islamic call to prayer on reel-to-reel tape.

I now see these calls as the elemental form of the expression of a longing for G-d and the attitude of humility that is part of it. These vocalizations seemed to cut though all the noise in the atmosphere and the distractions of the world. Having been raised a Catholic, I had been to mass countless times. It all seemed so routine and lacking emotional power by comparison.

I think religion is about emotion - as well as faith and belief.

“Spiritual” perhaps in a musical context means that which transcends in some way for the individual listener. The Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir, suizen, the Charles Brackeen quartet and Tibetan Buddhist music are the ones that spring to mind to me.
